Selector Lever Cable, Through February 2009

NOTE:

After installation, the selector lever cable movement must be checked and adjusted.

Removing 

-- Move the selector lever into the "S" position.

-- If necessary remove the air filter housing:

-- To remove the selector lever cable from the transmission, disconnect the selector lever cable clip by pressing in the -direction of the arrows 1- and then remove selector lever cable from the cable mounting bracket in the -direction of arrow 2- .

NOTE:

Do not use pliers because the tabs on the cable bracket could break off.

Do not bend the selector lever cable.

-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector shaft lever -3- using a open end wrench -2- .

-- Lift the vehicle.

To remove the selector level cable or the selector mechanism, the heat shield under the selector mechanism must be removed as follows:

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Loosen the nuts for the clamping sleeve -1- and slide the clamping sleeve toward the rear.

-- Remove the front tunnel brace nuts -arrows- and remove the front tunnel brace from the underbody.

-- If necessary remove the exhaust system bracket from the subframe -arrows- .

-- Tie up the front exhaust pipe using a suitable wire.

-- If equipped, remove nuts -1- and -2- , and remove the rear tunnel brace.

-- Disengage the center muffler and the rear muffler from the retaining straps -arrows- and tie them to the body with a suitable wire. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system, if necessary.

-- Remove the underbody trim panel nuts -arrows- .

-- Remove the lock washers -2- and -3- .

-- Lower the underbody cover on the inner side just enough until the heat shield -1- for the center tunnel can be removed.

-- Remove the four nuts and remove the shift housing under the selector mechanism.

-- Remove the selector lever cable securing plate in the -direction of arrow- . Always replace the securing plate.

The shift housing is pushed just slightly off the selector lever cable in the -direction of the arrows- .

The locking strap must be pushed forward in order to remove the cable in the -direction of arrow 1- .

-- Push the pin upward at the same time with a screwdriver in the -direction of arrow 2- .

-- Insert the screwdriver from underneath -arrow- while pushing the locking strap forward.

-- Remove the selector lever cable.

Remove the shift housing from the selector lever cable.

Installing 

Do not lubricate the selector lever cable.

-- Route the selector lever cable without tension and place it in the bracket on the transmission. Do not secure it yet.

-- When installing, make sure the selector lever cable is routed correctly.

-- Clip the selector lever cable into the bracket. Make sure the bracket does not touch the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler.

Tighten the nuts to 8 Nm.

-- Install the shift housing on the selector lever cable.

-- Install the selector lever cable into the selector mechanism.

-- Insert the selector lever cable into the bracket and then insert the pin through the eye from the top in the -direction of arrow 2- .

Install the securing plate only after having checked the selector lever cable for ease of movement. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .

-- Secure the selector lever cable with a new securing plate to the cable bracket -direction of arrow- on the selector mechanism.

-- Install the shift housing and four nuts. Tighten the nuts to specification.

-- Install the heat shield -1- under the selector mechanism and attach with the clamping screws -2- and -3- .

-- Attach the underbody trim panel to the body using the nuts -arrows- .

-- Install the exhaust system and align free of tension. Refer to [For engine(s) CBTA,CBUA] Description and Operation .

-- Install the tunnel braces under the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - TUNNEL BRIDGE .

-- Adjust the selector lever cable after installing. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

-- If removed, install the air filer housing.
