DTC 51 - Frontal Crash Detected

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Suzuki Swift and 1995 Geo Metro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

SDM contains a small transducer (accelerometer) which generates an electrical signal that is proportional to the vehicle's acceleration. Accelerometer signal is processed, and if it exceeds a pre-determined value, signal is reprocessed. If the result still exceeds limit that is stored in SDM, SDM allows sufficient current flow through inflator modules to cause deployment of air bags. Air bags will also be deployed if forward discriminating sensor closes and processed signal from accelerometer exceeds limit that is stored in SDM. SDM sets DTC 51 any time it senses a frontal impact sufficient to cause deployment of air bags.

NOTE: Test numbers below refer to test numbers in chart.
  1. In event that air bag inflator modules have not deployed, it is likely that DTC 51 was set erroneously by SDM.
  2. If there is no sign of frontal impact, DTC 51 was set erroneously by SDM.
  3. Checks for a faulty SDM.
  4. Verifies that DTC 51 was not set accidentally during diagnosis.
  5. If a frontal impact has occurred, perform all of indicated procedures to ensure that SIR system is returned to operation. Perform SIR Diagnostic System Check. See SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
WARNING: To avoid air bag deployment and injury when trouble shooting system, only use test equipment specified in diagnostic charts. Under no circumstances should battery powered test equipment or test light be used. Carefully follow all instructions.
