WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Suzuki Swift and 1995 Geo Metro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
This check is always the first step in diagnosing SIR system faults. Its purpose is to verify that AIR BAG warning lamp is functioning properly, to read DTCs from SDM, to direct technician to proper diagnostic chart, and to verify that repairs have been performed properly and completely. To minimize diagnosis time, it is important to follow diagnostic charts accurately.
NOTE:
Test numbers below refer to test numbers in chart.
- After ignition switch is turned to ON position, AIR BAG warning lamp should flash 7 times.
- While cranking engine, AIR BAG warning lamp should illuminate steadily.
- AIR BAG warning lamp should flash 6 times and turn off after engine is cranked.
- Verifies proper operation of serial data line and identifies and displays any historic DTCs which may be stored in SDM.
- If AIR BAG warning lamp only flashes 4 times when ignition switch is turned to ON position, there is a fault in redundant lamp driver circuit. This fault is diagnosed in DTC 62 diagnostic chart.
- AIR BAG warning lamp is not operating properly. This test distinguishes between a lamp that does not come on at all and a lamp that stays on all the time.
- Verifies proper operation of serial data line, reads any stored DTCs, and distinguishes between current and historic DTCs.
WARNING:
To avoid air bag deployment and injury when trouble shooting system, only use test equipment specified in diagnostic charts. Under no circumstances should battery powered test equipment or test light be used. Carefully follow all instructions.
