Transmission, Removing: Removing
-- Put the transmission in the "N" position.
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the selector lever cable from the transmission. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The cooling system may be under pressure. Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
Burns to skin and other parts of the body are possible.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure: cover the coolant reservoir cap with a suitable towel and carefully open.
-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow-.
-- Clamp off the coolant hoses -1- and -2- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094 .
-- Place a cleaning cloth underneath, to catch any coolant leaking out.
-- Loosen the hose clamps -arrows- and remove the coolant hoses -1- and -2-.
-- Seal the open connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
-- Remove the air duct pipe. Refer to AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, PERFORMANCE CLASS 3 , or AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, PERFORMANCE CLASS 1 AND 2 .
Risk of destroying due to electrostatic charge.
- Do not touch the connector terminals.
- Touch a grounded object (for example the hoist) and discharge any static electricity.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- by releasing the twist lock in the -direction of the arrow-.
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -1- using the Insert Tool 18 mm :T10179 or with the 18 mm Socket Wrench :T10509 -2-.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- with the Socket - XZN 14 :T10061 .
-- Remove the fuel filter and press to the side with the fuel hoses attached. Refer to the appropriate service information .
-- Support the engine in its installation position and pretension slightly. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION, GOLF .
-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Vehicles with washer fluid reservoir on the left side
-- Loosen the washer fluid reservoir and press to the side. Refer to WASHER FLUID RESERVOIR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Remove the nuts -1-.
-- Remove the bracket -2- with the wires and tie up.
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Remove the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITH STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right and left drive axles from the transmission and tie them up. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to the appropriate service information .
AWD vehicles and bolted driveshaft:
-- Remove the driveshaft from the bevel box and tie it up using suitable means. Refer to the appropriate service information .

AWD vehicles and connected driveshaft:
The help of a second technician is necessary for the following procedure.
-- Push the engine and transmission forward at the bottom.
-- Remove the driveshaft from the bevel box and tie it up using suitable means. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , or DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (R MODEL, TORQUE SPLITTER) .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Lower the Engine Support Bridge :10 - 222 A on the transmission side to the dimension -a-.
- Dimension -a- = approximately 80 mm
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Align the arms of the Transmission Support :3282 -D- to the holes in the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 61 :3282/61 -F-.
-- Insert the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 59 :3282/059 -A-, Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 49 :3282/049 -C- and Transmission Support - Pins 29 :3282/29 -E-.
-- Install the Transmission Support - Bolt :3282/34 -G- at the right rear.
Tip
The Transmission Support - Bolt :3282/34 -G- is located outside the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate :3282/61 -F-.
-- Align the Transmission Support :3282 -D- so that it is parallel to the transmission.
Conditions
- The marking -B- on the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 61 :3282/61 -F- points in direction of travel.
-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 under the transmission and support the transmission, without lifting it.
-- Insert the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate :3282/049 -A- into the transmission support.
-- Secure the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate :3282/059 -B- at the transmission support.
-- Install the Transmission Support - Bolt :3282/34 -A- into the transmission -1-.
-- Lift the transmission -1- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 -C- and transmission Support :3282 -B- and support.
Tip
The transmission -1- is disconnected from the engine in this position.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow-.
-- Slightly tilt the transmission outward over the spindle of the Transmission Support :3282 -B-.
-- Press off the transmission -1- from the engine and lower.
-- Make sure that there is sufficient distance to other components.
-- Refer to Transmission, Transporting .
-- Refer to Transmission, Securing to Engine/Transmission Holder .
