Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With Gasoline Engine
Brief Description
The transmission is removed downward separately.
>>From above: <<
The battery, air filter and starter are removed. Engine and transmission are supported before the left subframe mount is removed.
>>From below: <<
The -subframe- is removed together with the -pendulum support- and -both control arms-.
Both drive axles are disconnected from the transmission and remain inside the wheel bearing housings. Occasionally they will be moved to the side, but they still remain on the vehicle.

Removing
-- Lift the vehicle, all four mounts from lifting platform at the same height.
-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to BATTERY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Pry out the selector lever cable -1- from the selector lever using the Pry Lever: 80 - 200 .
-- Remove the bolts -2- and tie up the cable bracket -3- together with the selector lever cable.
-- Do not bend or kink the cable.
-- Remove the charge air pipe with the charge air hose. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM, DNFC, DNFE, DNFG, DSFB, DSFE AND DSFF or OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM, DNPA, DNNA, DNND AND DRNA .
-- Place a lint-free cloth on to transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb escaping coolant.
The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
Cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully open it before removing the coolant hoses.
-- Clamp the coolant hoses with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm: 3094 and remove them from the transmission fluid cooler.
-- Seal off the transmission fluid cooler connections with suitable sealing plugs taken from the Engine Bung Set: VAS 6122 .
-- Release the connector twist lock -1- for the Mechatronic by turning it in the direction of the starter and remove the connector.
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
It is recommended to remove the >>lower<< bolt first.
-- Remove all upper engine/transmission connecting bolts.
One bolt is located inside the hole for the starter -arrow-. Use Socket - Xzn 14: T10061 to remove the bolt.
-- Disconnect any hose and cable connections near the engine lifting eyes for the Engine Support Bridge: 10-222A .
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION, GOLF .
-- Lightly pretension the engine/transmission assembly and Engine Support Bridge using the Spindles.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
Vehicles with washer fluid reservoir on the longitudinal member:
-- Loosen the nuts -1 and 2- from the washer fluid reservoir -4- two to three turns but do not remove. Remove the nut -3-. Refer to WASHER FLUID RESERVOIR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
By doing so the washer fluid reservoir can later be pushed slightly to the side when removing the transmission.
Continuation for All:
-- Remove the wires and the bracket from the front oil pan -arrows- (two M6 nuts).
-- Route the wires near the transmission fluid pan upward and tie them secure.
Vehicles with front axle-differential lock
-- Remove the connector -arrow- from the Differential Locks Control Module -J647-.
Continuation for All
-- Remove the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITHOUT STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release the connector for the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -V475- -a- and remove the connector -b-.
-- Remove both drive axles from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Secure the drive axle to the suspension strut using a Tensioning Strap: T10038 .
Do not damage the surface protection of the shafts.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- of the assembly mounts for the transmission.
-- Lower the engine/transmission >>only<< on the transmission side approximately to the dimension -a- using the spindles on the Engine Support Bridge: 10 - 222 A .
Dimension -a- = approximately 80mm
-- Remove the remaining bolts except for one very accessible bolt between the engine and the transmission.
Vehicles with front axle-differential lock
-- One engine/transmission connecting bolt -arrow- is located next to the front axle differential lock.
Continuation for All
The Transmission Support: 3282 is equipped with the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 61: 3282/61 to remove the 0GC transmission.
-- Guide Engine and Gearbox Jack under transmission and support transmission. Do not lift.
The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.
-- Remove the last engine/transmission bolts.
-- Remove the transmission from the engine, >>while being careful of selector lever cable<<. Slightly tip the transmission outward over the Transmission Support: 3282 spindle.
-- Slightly turn and lower the transmission. Pay attention, that the flange is guided past when lowering the intermediate plate.
Pay attention to all of the lines when lowering the transmission.
Transmission, transporting. Refer to TRANSMISSION, TRANSPORTING .
Secure the transmission on the assembly stand. Refer to SECURING ON ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION HOLDER .
Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
