Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With Diesel Engine
Brief Description
The transmission is removed downward separately. The engine remains in the vehicle.
Remove the battery, the battery tray and the air filter housing >>from above<<. Engine and transmission are then supported so that the left subframe mount can be loosened.
>>From below: <<
The pendulum support and the left drive axle are removed. The right drive axle remains installed in the wheel bearing housing, it is only pivoted to the side.
The subframe remains in the vehicle.

Do not lower the vehicle onto the floor after loosening the central screw.
-- While a second technician presses the brake, remove the left drive axle bolt -arrow-.
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bleeder -1- if equipped, with the bleeder hose from the locking mechanism -arrow- of the battery tray -3-.
-- Remove the battery with the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air duct pipe. Refer to AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, DNFC, DNFE, DNFG, DSFB, DSFE AND DSFF or AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, DNPA, DNNA, DNND AND DRNA .
-- Pry out the selector lever cable -1- from the selector lever using the Pry Lever: 80 - 200 .
-- Remove the bolts -2- and cable bracket -3- together with the selector lever cable from the transmission.
-- Do not bend or kink the cable.
The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
Before removing the coolant hoses on the transmission, cover the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow- with a cloth and carefully open.
-- Place a lint-free cloth on to transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb escaping coolant.
-- Clamp off the coolant hoses -1 and 2- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm: 3094 . Loosen the hose clamps -arrows- and remove the hoses.
-- Release the connector twist lock -1- for the Mechatronic by turning it in the direction of the starter and remove the connector.
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the upper engine/transmission connecting bolt on the transmission with the Insert Tool - 18mm: T10179 or Insert Tool 18 mm: T10509 .
One bolt is located inside the hole for the starter -arrow-. Use Socket - Xzn 14: T10061 to remove the bolt.
-- Remove the fuel filter and set off to the side. Do not open the line system. Refer to FUEL FILTER .
-- Disconnect any hoses and cables located near the engine lifting eyes for the Engine Support Bridge: 10-222 A .
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION, GOLF .
-- Lightly pretension the engine/transmission assembly and Engine Support Bridge using the Spindles.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
Vehicles with washer fluid reservoir on the longitudinal member:
-- Loosen the nuts -1 and 2- from the washer fluid reservoir -4- two to three turns but do not remove. Remove the nut -3-. Refer to WASHER FLUID RESERVOIR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
By doing so the washer fluid reservoir can later be pushed slightly to the side when removing the transmission.
Continuation for All:
-- Remove the wire and bracket from the front oil pan -arrows-.
-- Route the wires near the transmission fluid pan upward and tie them secure.
-- Release the connector for the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -V475- -a- and remove the connector -b-.
-- If equipped, release the connector -1- on the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266- and remove.
-- Remove the left drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right drive axle heat shield -arrows- (if equipped). Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right drive axle from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Secure the drive axle to the suspension strut using a Tensioning Strap: T10038 .
Do not damage the surface protection of the shafts.
-- Remove the clamp -2- for the exhaust system from the motor and tie up the front exhaust pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER, GOLF FWD .
Ignore the bolts -1-.
-- Remove the pendulum support. Remove the bolt -1- first and then the bolts -2- and -3-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- of the assembly mounts for the transmission.
-- Lower the engine/transmission on the transmission side to approximately to the dimension -a- using the spindles on the Engine Support Bridge: 10 - 222 A .
Dimension -a- = approximately 80mm
-- Remove the fan shroud with the radiator fan. Refer to FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, GOLF, TIGUAN, ARTEON, T-ROC AND PASSAT .
