Shift Unit, Removing And Installing, With Transmission Installed: Installing

The gearshift shaft is in neutral -arrows- (shown here on another shift unit).
The transmission gearshift rail is located in neutral.
All sealing surfaces are cleaned.
Replace the O-ring to seal the shift unit to the transmission and the bolts.

The locking elbow for adjusting the shift mechanism must not be engaged

-- Use the Pry Lever: 80 - 200 to press against the spring force of the locking bushing in the -direction of the arrow- so that the gearshift shaft -1- does not touch the locking bushing -2- during installation.

-- Install the gearshift shaft -1- into the lower bearing -2- and into the shift forks -3-.

For clarity, the cap is removed. Refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSMISSION HOUSING "item 2").

-- Push the gearshift shaft -1- against the retaining sleeve -2- in the -direction of the arrow- and use the shift finger -3- to guide it all the way downward through the shift forks.

The gearshift cover -4- must be parallel to the bolting surface on the transmission housing while doing so.
It must be possible to move the gearshift shaft easily (forward and backward).

CAUTION:

If the gearshift cover is at an angle to the bolting surface, then the gearshift shaft was not inserted into the lower bearing.

-- Tighten the gearshift cover -4- with new bolts -3-.

-- Install the locking bolt -2- ; the locking elbow -arrow- must not be installed when doing so.

-- Install the Back-Up Lamp Switch -F4- -1-. Refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSMISSION HOUSING AND GEARSHIFT MECHANISM .

-- Transmission on vehicles with Stop/Start system: install the Transmission Neutral Position Sensor -G701- -arrow- and tighten the screw.

-- Connect the connectors.

-- To check, carefully pull on the connector.

-- Install the selector lever and selector relay lever. Refer to OVERVIEW - SHIFT MECHANISM .

-- Adjust the gearshift mechanism. Refer to SHIFT MECHANISM, ADJUSTING .

-- If removed, install the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Connect the battery and follow the steps after connecting the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- If removed, install the complete air filter housing.

Vehicles with Gasoline Engine

-- Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
