Front Disc Brake Pads, Checking Thickness

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:

Due to the geometry of the rims on some vehicles, an assessment or measurement of the remaining pad thickness may be hindered. Should this be the case, move the wheel to the side where the brake pad wear indicator is installed to better assess or measure the remaining pad thickness.

Procedure

-- Visually inspect the outer and inner pads through the design-dependent rim openings to determine the thickness.

-- To better assess or measure the remaining pad thickness, move the wheel to the side where the brake pad wear indicator is installed, if necessary.

-- Remove the wheel bolt caps if necessary.

-- Mark the position of the wheel to the brake rotor.

-- Remove the wheel bolts and then the wheel.

-- Measure the thickness of the outer and inner brake pad.

Pad Thickness "Without" Backing Plate

Permissible wear: 2 mm

NOTE:

With a pad thickness (without backing plate) of 2 mm, the brake pads have reached their wear limit and must be replaced (repair procedure).

If the disc brake pads are replaced, the brake rotors must also be checked for wear. Checking and replacing the brake pads, if necessary, is a repair procedure.

Procedure

-- Check the brake rotor for wear. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT BRAKES .

-- If necessary, secure the wheel at the marked position.

-- Tighten the wheel bolts diagonally to the tightening specification. Refer to WHEEL BOLTS, TIGHTENING TO SPECIFICATION .

-- After the procedures have been completed, return the adapter to the vehicle tool kit.

-- Pull off wheel bolt caps, if necessary.
