Final Drive, Removing And Installing: Installing
Install in reverse order of removal:
-- Secure the final drive -1- from falling using a strap from the universal mount -A- and bring into the position shown.
-- Pay attention that the stop washers -B- are installed as shown on the final drive. Correct installation prevents the rubber fittings -A- from falling or sliding out of the washer when installing.
Installation position of the stop washers. Refer to OVERVIEW - FINAL DRIVE .
-- Before installing the final drive, place the two new bolts in the rear bearing -arrows- from above.
-- Lift the final drive and guide it over the rear axle.
-- Connect the vent lines -arrows- to the final drive vent pipes.
-- Lift the final drive into the installation position using the transmission jack.
When removing and installing the drive axles, the final drive must be movable in the rear area.
-- For this tighten the bolt by hand in the front mounting bracket -arrow- all the way. Pay attention that the lower stop washer is installed correctly. Refer to Installing .
-- So that the final drive remains mobile loosen the bolt -arrow- again not more than five turns.
-- Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.
-- Lift the final drive -A- in the rear -arrow 1- and push it as far as possible to the left -arrow 2-.
-- Carefully guide the right drive axle -B- upward into the flange.
-- Put the final drive back into its installation position.
-- Connect the right drive axle on the final drive.
-- Lift the final drive -A- in the rear -arrow 1- and push it as far as possible to the right -arrow 2-.
-- Carefully guide the left drive axle -B- upward into the flange.
-- Put the final drive back into its installation position.
-- Connect the left drive axle on the final drive.
-- So that the driveshaft can be installed again, support the rear final drive using the :VAS6931 or :VAG1383A .
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- on the front mounting bracket.
-- Push the final drive as far as possible toward the rear.
-- Attach the driveshaft to the flange/driveshaft on the rear final drive so that the markings -arrows- line up. Then install the bolts hand-tight.
-- When removing and installing the driveshaft, always be careful not to damage the bushing -arrow-.
-- Attach the mounting bracket with the new bolt -arrow- hand-tight. Do not tighten the bolt yet. Make sure the stop washer is installed correctly. Refer to Installing .
-- Install the rear bolt for the final drive to the rear axle using the :T10035 . Refer to OVERVIEW - FINAL DRIVE .
-- Bolt the rear axle to the body. Refer to REAR AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Tighten the final drive from >>underneath<< -arrow-. Refer to OVERVIEW - FINAL DRIVE .
-- Tighten the driveshaft. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT .
-- Connect the connector -B- to the All Wheel Drive Control Module -J492- -A-. Ignore -C-.
-- Tighten the drive axles. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the rear stabilizer bar. Refer to STABILIZER BAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the rear section of the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER - 2.0L , OVERVIEW - MUFFLER - 3.6L .
If the final drive is replaced:
-- Check the oil level of the all wheel drive clutch. Refer to ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUTCH OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .
-- Check the final drive oil level. Refer to GEAR OIL .
