Differential, Adjusting

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

A new differential adjustment is required when the following components have been replaced:

Adjustment Overview. Refer to ADJUSTMENT OVERVIEW .

-- Press the outer race/tapered roller bearing into transmission housing without shim, using : 30-205  . Refer to Figure.

NOTE:

Bearing inner race and outer race of tapered roller bearing are paired. Do not interchange them.

-- Press outer race/tapered roller bearing into the clutch housing using the : 30-205  . Refer to Figure.

-- Insert the differential into the clutch housing.

-- Position the transmission housing and tighten the five bolts to the tightening specification.

-- Mount the : VW387  and set the dial gauge to "0" with 1 mm pretension.

-- Move the differential up and down, read off play on dial gauge and note. (example: 0.70 mm).

Shim, Determining 

The specified bearing pre-load is obtained by adding a constant pre-load figure of 0.25 mm to the reading obtained.

Example:

Measured value 0.70 mm
+ preload (constant value) 0.25 mm
Shim thickness = 0.95 mm

NOTE:

Allocate the shims. Refer to the Parts Information.

-- Remove the transmission housing and remove the tapered roller bearing outer race from the transmission housing.

A -  Counter Support, for example, : VAS251623 

B -  Internal Puller, for example, : VAS251615 

-- Install the shim with the correct thickness, thickest shim first.

If the measured shim thickness is larger than those listed in the table, then install two shims that add up to the necessary thickness.

Tolerance variations make it possible to find the exact shim thickness required.

-- Re-install the outer race/tapered roller bearing with the selected shim (in the example: 0.95 mm) (refer to Figure) and tighten the transmission housing.

Tightening Specifications
