Transmission Fluid Level, Checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit: SMN372500
- Oil Filler: VAS6262A
- Also Oil Filler - Adapter 6: VAS6262/6 for some fluid containers
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Brake Line Tool Kit - Pipe Cutter: VAS6056/2
Note the Following Information:
- If the DSG® transmission fluid is filled, only transmission fluid available as a replacement part may be used. Refer to the Parts Information.
- The : VAS6262/6 must also be used for some fluid containers.
- It may be necessary to shorten the bleed pipe on the : VAS6262A .
Shorten the Bleed Pipe on the : VAS6262A as Follows:
-- Shorten the pipe to dimension -a- so that the bleed pipe on the : VAS6262A will not touch the bottom on some fluid containers.
Dimension -a- = 210 mm
Dimension -a- is measured starting from the shaft of the : VAS6262A (green surface in the magnified area).
If dimension -a- is greater than 210 mm:
-- Make a mark on the bleed pipe, dimension -a-, and cut it, with for example the : VAS6056/2 .
Requirements
- The vehicle is level and all hoist supports are the same height.
- Noise insulation is removed. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
- The Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected.
- To begin working, the oil temperature must not be higher than 45 °C (113 °F).
- Test temperature: 35 to 45 °C (95 to 113 °F)
Checking
-- "Oil level, checking" using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Let the transmission cool down if the oil temperature is higher than 45 °C (113 °F).
The engine is idling and the selector lever is in "P".
-- Move the : SNM372500 under the transmission near the transmission fluid drain and check plug.
-- Remove the transmission fluid drain-and check plug -arrow-.
-- Always replace the gasket for the drain plug -arrow-.
Even if the level of transmission fluid is too low, first a small amount of transmission fluid will flow out of the overflow tube, because it fills during operation.
-- Let the excess fluid drain.
-- Install the drain plug with a new gasket as soon as all the fluid has drained out (it starts to drip).
-- If no oil flows out, the oil must be filled.
Filling
-- Install the : VAS6262A into the check hole hand-tight.
Shake bottles well before opening so that the settled components at the bottom of the bottle are mixed sufficiently with the oil.
-- Attach the : VAS6262A to the fluid bottle. Pay attention to the instructions while doing so. Refer to the information at the beginning of the procedure.
-- Fill 1.0 liters (1.05 quarts) of transmission fluid.
-- Remove the : VAS6262A at the quick-release coupling and check it.
If Fluid Flows out of the Adapter Hole:
The fluid must not be topped off.
-- Let the excess fluid drain.
-- As soon as the fluid has run out (it begins to drip), remove the : VAS6262A and install the screw with new gasket.
If No Fluid Flows out of Hole:
-- Another liter (1.05 quarts) must be added.
Too little or too much fluid will impair the transmission.
Insert the fluid drain plug and check plug with a new seal and tighten them.
