Differential, Adjusting: Notes

(Determining the Correct Shim for the Differential)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Measuring Set - Magnetic Plate - 50mm - VW385/17-
- Dial Gauge Holder - VW387-
- Press Piece - Rod - VW407-
- Press Piece - Multiple Use - 30-205-
- Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm - VAG1331-
- Internal Puller - VAS251615-
- Counter Support - VAS251623-
- Dial Gauge
A new differential adjustment is required when the following components have been replaced:
- Transmission Housing
- Clutch Housing
- Differential housing
or the
- Differential tapered roller bearing
Adjustment Overview. Refer to ADJUSTMENT OVERVIEW " .
- Press the outer race/tapered roller bearing without the shim into the transmission housing.
NOTE:
Bearing inner race and outer race of tapered roller bearing are paired. Do not interchange them.
- Installing outer race/tapered roller bearing into the clutch housing
- Insert differential into clutch housing.
- Mount the transmission housing and tighten the five bolts to 25 Nm.
- Attach the -VW387- and set the dial gauge to "0" with 1 mm preload.
- Move differential up and down, read off play on dial gauge and note. (example: 0.70 mm).
