Selector Mechanism: Removing

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE . Disconnect the connector -2- from the cover while doing this.

-- Remove the center console. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the selector mechanism to the vehicle wiring harness.

-- Remove the engine cover, if necessary. Refer to Removing . .

-- Remove the complete air filter housing:

-- Remove the lock washers -A- and -B-. The lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting cable.

Loosen the adjusting screw -arrow-.

NOTE:

Use pliers to remove the lock washer -B-. Do not use a sharp-edged lever. Otherwise the selector lever cable could get damaged.

If necessary, remove the cable bracket -2- and selector lever cable from the transmission. Remove the bolts -1- and the lock washer -3-.

Replace the bolts -1- and lock washers.

Bolt tightening specification -1-. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Lift the vehicle.

-- Remove the front and rear tunnel braces from the body. Refer to Removal and Installation .

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter. Refer to Removing .

-- Disconnect the center and rear mufflers from the retaining straps and tie them to the body with wire. Refer to [EXHAUST PIPE AND MUFFLER, SEPARATING .

-- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the selector mechanism.

NOTE:

A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- in the vehicle interior.

-- Remove the bracket -A-, if equipped.

-- Remove the selector mechanism -B- with the selector lever cable and selector housing downward.

NOTE:

The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.

To do this, remove the four bolts  4.

Remove then the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable inside the passenger compartment in -direction of arrow-.

The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable.
