Selector Mechanism

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle, 2015 Volkswagen Beetle, 2014 Volkswagen Beetle, and 2013 Volkswagen Beetle. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:

The selector mechanism and the selector lever cable cannot be separated from each other. Both are removed at the same time.

After installation, the selector lever cable movement must be checked and adjusted.

WARNING:

Move the selector lever into "P" and set the parking brake before working with the engine running.

Removing

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Remove the selector lever handle SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE . Disconnect the connector -2- from the cover while doing this.

-- Remove the center console. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the selector mechanism to the vehicle wiring harness.

-- Remove the engine cover and the air filter. Refer to ENGINE COVER , ENGINE COVER or ENGINE COVER .

-- Disconnect the cable by squeezing in the -direction of arrows 1- and then remove it from the cable mounting bracket in the -direction of arrow 2-.

NOTE:

Do not use pliers because the tabs on the cable bracket could break off.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Pry the cable -1- off the selector lever -3-, using for example, a wrench -2-.

-- Disconnect the selector lever cable -1- from the bracket -arrow- on the transmission.

-- Lift the vehicle.

-- Remove the front and rear tunnel braces from the body. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION or DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Disconnect the center and rear mufflers from the retaining straps and tie them to the body with wire. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION or DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the selector mechanism.

NOTE:

A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- in the vehicle interior.

-- Remove the bracket -A-, if equipped.

-- Remove the selector mechanism -B- with the selector lever cable and selector housing downward.

NOTE:

The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.

To do this, remove the four bolts -item 4- in Figure.

Remove then the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable inside the passenger compartment in -direction of arrow-.

The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable.

Install in reverse order of removal.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Do not lubricate the selector lever cable.

-- Push the selector lever cable carefully onto the selector lever and insert it into the cable bracket.

-- Install the heat shield under the shift mechanism.

-- Reconnect exhaust system making sure it is not under stress. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION or DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Install the front and rear tunnel braces on the body. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Install the center console. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Install the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

-- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .

-- Check the selector mechanism. Refer to GEARSHIFT MECHANISM, CHECKING .

-- Install the engine cover and the air filter. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
