Transmission, Removing

-- If possible, before removing print out a diagnostic protocol for the vehicle. Affix the protocol to transmission before sending back the removed transmission.

Short Description:

The transmission is remove downward by itself. The engine remains in the vehicle.

Remove the battery housing, the air filter and the engine cover. The engine with transmission are then supported so that the transmission mount can be removed.

Remove the noise insulation and the drive axles from underneath. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack.

NOTE:

The subframe is not removed.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

-- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.

-- Turn the steering wheel to the center position.

-- Remove the ignition key and engage the steering wheel lock.

-- Push the brake in order to remove the left drive axle bolt -arrow- (second technician required).

-- Lift the vehicle.

NOTE:

Do not set the vehicle on the floor. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the engine cover and the air filter with the intake duct.

-- Remove the battery. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the battery housing.

-- Disconnect the selector lever cable -1- from the cable bracket -2- and remove it.

WARNING:

Steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective eyewear and clothing protection to prevent eye injury and scalding. Cover the cap on the expansion tank with a cloth and open it carefully.

-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.

-- Install the hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. 3094 to the hoses and remove the hoses from the transmission fluid cooler.

-- Disconnect the connectors from the transmission and starter.

-- Remove the transmission fluid pipe -arrow- from the transmission.

-- Remove the bolt from the top of the starter.

-- Lift the vehicle.

-- Remove the noise insulation.

-- Remove the lower section of the left wheel housing liner.

-- If equipped, remove the heat shield from the engine above the right drive axle.

-- Remove the vehicle level control system sensor from both control arms. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the ball joint to lower control arm nuts -arrows- on both sides.

Ball joint to control arm nut tightening specifications, refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Specifications .

-- Remove both drive axles from the transmission. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the left drive axle.

-- Secure the right drive axle in this position as high as possible to the strut.

-- Disconnect both connectors from the transmission.

-- Remove the cable bracket from lower starter bolt.

-- Remove the lower bolt from the starter and then remove the starter.

-- Remove the lower bolts between the engine and the transmission.

-- Leave one easily accessible bolt for safety.

-- Start with both lower bolts.

When installing, first tighten bolts -B- and then tighten bolt -A-. Tightening specification. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Specifications .

NOTE:

It is necessary to remove the transmission fluid pipes from the transmission in order to remove the upper bolts that connect the engine to the transmission. Transmission fluid will drip between the engine and the intermediate plate.

To prevent that from happening, first disconnect the pipes -arrows- under the vehicle so that the fluid can run out at the bottom.

Keep the drip tray for workshop crane VAS 6208 under the transmission to catch any fluid dripping out.

-- Lower the vehicle.

-- Cover the transmission fluid pipe connections and the transmission fluid cooler on the transmission with a cloth.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- but do not remove the pipes.

-- Remove the last bolt.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine.

NOTE:

Pay attention to the torque converter. It must be removed together with the transmission.

-- Make sure there is sufficient clearance to the subframe when lowering the transmission. If necessary, adjust the transmission support 3282 slightly afterwards.

-- The cable bracket and the selector lever cable bracket must be replaced when installing a new transmission.
