Engine Cooling Symptom Diagnosis

Condition Possible Cause Action
Engine overheats (Radiator fan operates)  Loose or broken accessory drive belt Adjust or replace accessory drive belt. See  ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSION INSPECTION  . 
Not enough coolant Check coolant level and add as necessary. See  COOLANT LEVEL CHECK  . 
Faulty thermostat Replace thermostat assembly. See  THERMOSTAT ASSEMBLY INSPECTION  . 
Faulty water pump Replace water pump. See  WATER PUMP INSPECTION  . 
Dirty or bent radiator fins Clean or repair.  RADIATOR ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION AND CLEANING  . 
Coolant leakage on cooling system Repair cooling system. See  ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION AND CLEANING  . 
Clogged radiator Check and replace radiator as necessary. See  RADIATOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  . 
Faulty radiator cap Check radiator cap. See  ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION AND CLEANING  . 
Dragging brakes Adjust brake. See  BRAKES SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  . 
Poorly charged battery Check and replace battery as necessary. See  BATTERY INSPECTION  . 
Poor electricity generation by generator Check and repair generator as necessary. See  GENERATOR SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  . 
ECT sensor faulty Check and replace ECT sensor as necessary. See  ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR INSPECTION  . 
Radiator cooling fan motor faulty Check and replace radiator cooling fan motor as necessary. See  RADIATOR COOLING FAN ASSEMBLY ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  . 
ECM faulty Check and replace ECM as necessary. See  INSPECTION OF ECM AND ITS CIRCUITS  . 
Wiring or grounding faulty Repair as necessary  .
Too much additional electrical equipment Dismount necessary pieces of equipment  .
Engine overheats (Radiator fan does not operate)  Fuse blown Check and replace fuse  .
Radiator cooling fan relay faulty Check and replace radiator cooling fan relay as necessary. See  RADIATOR COOLING FAN RELAY INSPECTION  . 
ECT sensor faulty Check and replace ECT sensor as necessary. See  ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR INSPECTION  .
