Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

NOTE: For better performance and results of this diagnostic procedure, usage of appropriate wiring diagram is recommended. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, perform A-4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS, then go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Check fuel filler cap for proper installation, and cap gasket for deterioration. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is faulty, tighten or replace fuel filler cap as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  3. Perform EVAP system components leakage check. See EVAP SYSTEM LEAKAGE CHECK under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. For vacuum hose locations, see appropriate vacuum diagram in VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If any EVAP system component leak is found, go to next step. If EVAP system leak is not found, tighten or replace fuel filler cap. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  4. Perform EVAP system smoke test. See EVAP SYSTEM SMOKE TEST under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP system is okay, go to next step. If EVAP system is faulty, repair as necessary and repeat step  5 .
  5. Perform EVAP-CPV component test. See EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CPV is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CPV is faulty, replace EVAP-CPV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. Perform EVAP-CVV component test. See EVAP CANISTER VENT VALVE under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If EVAP-CVV is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CVV is faulty, replace EVAP-CVV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position.Perform FTP sensor component test. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE & TEMPERATURE SENSOR under FUEL EVAPORATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If FTP sensor is okay, go to next step. If FTP sensor is faulty, replace FTP sensor. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR under FUEL SYSTEM in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  8. Check fuel level sensor and circuit referring to DTC P0461: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT - RANGE/PERFORMANCE  . If diagnostic procedure results are faulty, repair as necessary and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If diagnostic procedure results are okay, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
