Center Support Assembly Reconditioning: Reassembly
NOTE:
Clutch discs should be soaked in ATF for 15 minutes prior to installation. Lubricate all parts with ATF. Coat thrust bearings and races with Transjel(R) Transmission Assembly Lubricant or petroleum jelly.
NOTE:
For special tool part numbers, refer to special tools list. See SPECIAL TOOLS
.
- Carefully install 2 NEW planetary sun gear seal rings. Assemble one-way clutch into outer race with end of retainers facing rearward, if necessary. See Fig 1 . Install 2 retainers to outer race and stake retainer tabs. Install B2 brake hub assembly to the planetary sun gear.
- Perform the following steps in order to inspect the planetary sun gear operation. See Figure
:
- Hold the B2 brake hub assembly.
- Inspect that the gear locks when turned in the clockwise direction.
- Inspect that the gear turns freely in the counter clockwise direction.
- Install 2 NEW "O" Rings to the B2 brake piston. Install the B2 brake piston to the center support.
- Install the B2 brake piston return springs and seat to the B2 brake piston.NOTE: DO NOT align the snap ring opening with B2 brake piston return spring retainer lug during the next step. See Fig 2 .
- Install the B2 brake piston return spring snap ring onto the B2 piston return spring retainer using Clutch Spring Compressor and a hydraulic press. Install 3 each of B2 brake plates and discs, starting with a plate and alternating.
- Install the B2 brake flange with the chamfered side facing the disc. Install the B2 snap ring into the center support.
- Measure the B2 brake piston stroke using Dial Indicator Set and Magnetic Base:
- Place Dial Indicator Set plunger on the B2 brake piston.
- Apply 58-114 psi (4.08-8.02 Kg/CM2 ) of air pressure into the second left overdrive case fluid passage. See Figure .
- Measure B2 brake piston stroke. See CENTER SUPPORT SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If the B2 brake piston stroke is not within specifications, disassemble and inspect.
- Install 2 NEW "O" Rings to the B1 brake piston. Install the B1 brake piston to the center support.
- Install the B1 brake piston return springs and seat to the B1 brake piston. Install the B1 brake piston return spring snap ring onto the B1 brake piston return spring retainer using Clutch Spring Compressor and a hydraulic press.
- Install 3 each of B1 brake plates and discs, starting with a plate and alternating. Install the B1 brake flange with the chamfered side facing the disc. Install the B1 snap ring into the center support.
- Measure the B1 brake piston stroke using Dial Indicator Set and Magnetic Base. See Figure
:
- Place the Dial Indicator Set plunger on the B1 brake piston.
- Apply 58-114 psi (4.08-8.02 Kg/CM2 ) of air pressure into the extreme left overdrive case fluid passage.
- Measure B1 brake piston stroke. See CENTER SUPPORT SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If the B1 brake piston stroke is not within specifications, disassemble and inspect.
- Install the 3 rear seal rings to the center support. Install the planetary gear to the center support. Install the planetary gear snap ring using Parallel Jaws.
