Disassembly & Measurements

NOTE: For special tool part numbers, refer to special tools list. See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  1. Remove the planetary gear snap ring using the Parallel Jaws. See Fig 1 . Remove the planetary gear from the center support. See Fig 2 .
  2. Measure the B1 brake piston stroke using Dial Indicator Set and Magnetic Base:
    • Place the Dial Indicator Set plunger on the B1 brake piston. See Fig 3 .
    • Apply 57-114 psi (4.08-8.02 Kg/CM2 ) of air pressure into the extreme left overdrive case fluid passage.
    • Measure the B1 brake piston stroke. See CENTER SUPPORT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    • If the B1 brake piston stroke is not within specifications, replace the brake flange or the disc.
  3. Remove the 3 rear sealing rings from the center support. Remove the B1 brake clutch snap ring from the center support using a Flathead screwdriver. See Fig 4 .
  4. Remove the following B1 brake components from the center support:
    • The flange. See Fig 5 .
    • The clutch discs.
    • The clutch plates.
  5. Remove the B1 brake piston return spring snap ring from the B1 brake piston retainer using Clutch Spring Compressor, and a hydraulic press. See Fig 6 .
  6. Remove the B1 brake piston return springs seat and 12 springs from the center support. See Fig 7 .
NOTE: When using compressed air to remove components, air pressure should not exceed 14 psi (0.98 Kg/CM2 ).
  7. Apply low pressure compressed air to the extreme left fluid passage in order to remove the B1 brake piston. See Fig 8 . Remove the "O" Rings from the B1 brake piston.
  8. Measure the B2 brake piston stroke using Dial Indicator Set and Magnetic Base:
    • Place the Dial Indicator Set plunger on the B2 brake piston.
    • Apply 58-114 psi (4.08-8.02 Kg/CM2 ) of air pressure into the second left overdrive case fluid passage. See Fig 9 .
    • Measure the B2 brake piston stroke. See CENTER SUPPORT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    • If the B2 brake piston stroke is not within specifications, replace the brake flange or the disc.
  9. Remove the B2 brake snap ring from the center support. Remove the following B2 brake components from the center support:
    • The flange.
    • The clutch discs.
    • The clutch plates.
  10. Remove the B2 brake piston return spring snap ring from the B2 brake piston retainer using the Clutch Spring Compressor and a hydraulic press. See Fig 6 . Remove the B2 brake piston return spring seat and springs from the center support.
NOTE: When using compressed air to remove components, air pressure should not exceed 14 psi (0.98 Kg/CM2 ).
  11. Apply low pressure compressed air to the second left fluid passage in order to remove the B2 brake piston. See Fig 10 . Remove the "O" Rings from the B2 brake piston.
  12. Perform the following steps in order to inspect the planetary sun gear operation. See Fig 11 :
    • Hold the B2 brake hub assembly.
    • Inspect that the gear locks when turned in the clockwise direction.
    • Inspect that the gear turns freely in the counter clockwise direction.
  13. Remove the B2 brake hub assembly from the planetary sun gear. See Fig 12 . Using a pin punch, loosen staked parts of one-way clutch rear side retainer, then remove retainer, as necessary. See Fig 13 . Remove the 2 planetary sun gear sealing rings.
