Description & Operation
The main components of the Air Bag System are the driver-side and passenger-side inflator modules, and the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). See Fig 1 . Deployment loops supply current through inflator modules which will cause deployment of air bags in the event of an accident severe enough to warrant deployment. The main function of the Sensing and Diagnostic Module is to supply sufficient voltage to inflator modules, ensuring sufficient energy to deploy air bags for a few seconds if voltage is lost in an accident. A second function of the Sensing and Diagnostic Module is air bag system diagnosis. If monitored voltages fall outside of expected limits, Sensing and Diagnostic Module will indicate a system fault by storing a malfunction code and illuminating AIR BAG indicator light.
