Sir Coil: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Suzuki Swift, 1996 Pontiac Firefly, and 1996 Geo Metro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG  SYSTEM. Straighten front wheels of vehicle and turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the driver-side inflator module. Refer to DRIVER-SIDE INFLATOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Remove steering wheel from steering shaft. Place alignment marks on shaft and on steering wheel. Install a Steering Wheel Puller (J-1859-A) to steering wheel and remove steering wheel from shaft.
    NOTE: NEVER hammer on steering wheel or steering shaft. This will cause damage to steering column.
  4. Remove steering column hole cover, driver knee bolster, and knee bolster panel. Loosen 2 upper steering column mounting bolts and lower column slightly. Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
  5. Disconnect SIR coil and combination switch connectors near base of steering column. Loosen SIR coil and combination switch harness retainers. Remove 3 SIR coil retaining screws and remove SIR coil and combination switch assembly.
