Engine Oil: Capacities And Specification Through My 2020
A new VW engine oil standard 508 00/509 00 is used in most VW engines. It is characterized by the ability to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
The most important facts:
- VW 508 00/509 00 is a combined product where the gasoline specification is given with the 508 00 and the diesel specification with the 509 00.
- Volkswagen recommends to not use the new specifications in older engine generations. The recommended specifications are assigned to the engines in this information.
- While servicing, engines with particulate filters (gasoline and diesel) may also be filled using engine oil specifications VW 504 00/507 00. This can lead to higher fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
- Engines without particulate filters may also be filled with engine oil specifications VW 502 00 or VW 505 01 while servicing. This can lead to higher fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
- The new oil can be mixed.
- Engine damage can occur if the oil with Volkswagen engine oil standard 508 00/509 00 is used in engines that are not designed for it.
- From MY 2018, engines that may not use the new oil have an information label (lock carrier/engine compartment), which indicates the oil specification to be used.
- An overview of the Volkswagen approved engine oils can be found In Elsa2Go/UPG.

OR: if no oil is present that has a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-20, add a maximum of 0.5 liters of engine oil so that the oil quality standard required is VW 502 00 or VW 504 00 and has a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.
Using oil with a different viscosity grade than SAE 0W-20 can cause the vehicle emissions and fuel consumption to increase.
Only use different oils in cases of emergency.
