Transmission, Removing: Removing

-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.

-- With the vehicle still resting on its wheels, loosen the left bolt -arrow- a maximum of 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. Refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .

-- Do not place the vehicle on floor after loosening the bolt.

-- Move the selector lever in >>N<< and loosen the parking brake.

-- Lift the vehicle, all four mounts from lifting platform at the same height.

-- Remove the left front wheel.

-- Remove the air filter housing with the air duct hose. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to BATTERY .

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the turbocharger air duct pipe/charge air cooler. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM .

-- Use the Pry Lever :80-200  to pry the selector lever cable -3- out of the selector lever -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and secure the cable bracket -1- together with the selector lever cable at a suitable location.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Disconnect the connectors -1- and -2- from the transmission.

-- Place lint-free cloth on to ATF cooler and transmission to absorb exiting coolant.

CAUTION:

The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm. Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

Burns to skin and other parts of the body are possible.

- Wear safety gloves.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Reduce the pressure: cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and carefully open.

-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow-.

-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray :VAS 6208  under the transmission.

-- Clamp off the coolant hoses -1- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094  -arrows-.

-- Loosen the clamp -2-. Remove the coolant hoses -1- on the ATF cooler -3-.

-- Seal off the transmission fluid cooler connections -3- with suitable sealing plugs taken from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122  .

-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and push the bracket -3- with the wires toward the radiator grille.

NOTE:

Bolt -1- and ground wire -2- not present!

-- Remove the left drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -2-.

-- Remove the drive axle heat shield -1- in the -direction of the arrow-.

-- Remove the nuts for the support joint -arrows- from the right control arm.

-- Remove the control arm from the ball joint.

-- Loosen the right drive axle from the transmission using the Drive Axle Wedge Tool :T10161  -1-.

-- Secure the right drive axle to the suspension strut using a Tensioning Strap :T10038  .

Do not damage the shaft protective coating while doing so.

AWD Vehicles

-- Remove the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, REMOVING .

Continuation for all vehicles

-- Release and disconnect the connector -1- from the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266-.

-- Remove the bolts -1-, -2- and -3-.

-- Remove the pendulum support.

-- If equipped, remove the cover -1-.

-- Remove the six nuts for the torque converter -1- through the opening in the intermediate plate.

-- To do so, turn the engine an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation -arrow- using the Counterhold - Multiple Use :T10172A  .

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.

- Turn the engine only in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Mount the Engine Support :T10533  as shown and tighten the bolts hand-tight.

Bolt -3- = original pendulum support bolt

-- Tighten an M8 x 30 mm bolt -1- with a washer -2- in the threaded hole for the noise insulation.

The transmission must be pushed slightly forward to tighten the Engine Support :T10533  .

-- Push the engine/transmission as far forward as possible by turning the spindle for the Engine Support :T10533  . Avoid bumping the fan shroud with other components.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -1-, -2- and -3-.

The bolt -2- is located in the starter opening.

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Use the support device to lightly pretension the engine and transmission.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the transmission assembly mount -1-.

-- Then lower the engine with transmission -1- up to dimension -a- using the support device.

  1. approximately 70 mm

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -5-, -6- and -7-.

-- Mount the Transmission Support : 3282  on the Engine and Gearbox Jack.

-- Align the Transmission Support : 3282  -2- to the transmission -1- via the spindles -3-.

-- Position mounts with Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 48 : 3282/048  -arrows- on the transmission -1-.

-- Support the transmission from underneath using the engine and gearbox jack Engine and Gearbox Jack.

The transmission is separated from the engine in this position.

-- Remove the remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts -4- and -8-.

-- Pry up the transmission -3- from the engine at the same time push the torque converter -1- against the transmission in the -direction of the arrow- using for example a screwdriver -2-.

-- Guide the transmission past the subframe when lowering it. Re-adjust the Transmission Support :3282  slightly, if necessary.

-- The transmission is removed together with the torque converter. To prevent the torque converter from falling out, secure it with wire -A-, for example.
