Removing
-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to Battery .
-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector lever -2-, for example, using a wrench.
-- Disconnect the connector -6- from the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125- and free up the wire at the bracket.
-- Remove the bolts -5- from the cable bracket -4-. Do not remove the lock washer -3-.
Vehicles without ATF preheater
-- Disengage the gearshift lever cable -1- from the clip -2-.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
So that the cable is not damaged when removing and installing the transmission, use, for example, a cable tie to secure the cable on the body in a suitable position.
Vehicles with ATF preheater
-- Remove the coolant pipe for the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION COOLANT PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disengage the selector lever cable from the clip -arrow-.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
So that the cable is not damaged when removing and installing the transmission, use, for example, a cable tie to secure the cable on the body in a suitable position.
The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
Before removing the coolant hoses on the transmission, cover the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow- with a cloth and carefully open.
-- Place a lint-free cloth on the transmission fluid cooler (ATF preheater) and the transmission to catch escaping coolant.
-- Clamp off the coolant hoses -1- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094 -arrows-.
-- Remove the coolant hoses -1- from the ATF preheater -2-.
-- Seal the coolant hoses and connections with suitable plugs taken from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
-- Remove the Transmission Fluid Cooling Valve - N509- from the transmission. Refer to OVERVIEW - ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the upper bolts -arrows- connecting the transmission to the engine, for example, with a 12-point flex head socket wrench.
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .
-- Lightly pretension the engine/transmission assembly and Engine Support Bridge using the Spindles.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Remove the connector from the transmission as follows Push the retainer -1- in the direction of the arrow, open the hook -2- and then remove the connector -3- from the transmission.
-- Remove the bolt -A- and the ATF lines -2- from the thermostat -1-. The bolts -B- are not removed.
-- Seal the ATF lines and connections on the thermostat with suitable plugs taken from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
-- Remove the subframe. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .
-- Remove the right and left drive axle from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Secure both drive axles to the suspension strut using the Tensioning Strap :T10038 .
Do not damage the surface protection of the shafts.
AWD Vehicles
-- Remove the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, INSTALLING, VEHICLES WITH 2.0L - 162-175 KW ENGINE .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the six converter nuts -arrow-.
-- To do so, turn the engine an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation -arrow- using the Counterhold - Multiple Use :T10172A .
If all six torque converter nuts are not removed, the torque converter will be pulled out when removing the transmission from the engine!
Use the Crankshaft Adapter :T03003 to counterhold at the belt pulley/vibration damper when loosening the torque converter nuts.
-- Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine -3 and 6-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from the left subframe mount for the transmission.
-- Lower the engine/transmission as far as dimension -a- using the spindles on the Engine Support Bridge :10 - 222 A .
-a- = approximately 70 mm
The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.
-- Place the Transmission Support :3282 -A- on the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 -B-.
Install the Transmission Support :3282 on the transmission as follows with the Mounting Elements:
- The Engine and Gearbox Jack with Transmission Support is positioned under the transmission -1- so that the spindle -left arrow- points forward in the direction of travel.
- The spindle -right arrow- points in the direction of travel to the left.
- The Mounts -C- are positioned in the groove surrounding the transmission fluid pan as shown.
- The Pin -D- locks in the recess on the front right side of the transmission.
-- Install the Transmission Support - Pins 29 :3282/29 in the rear hole for the pendulum support bolt on the transmission.
-- Support the transmission by carefully lifting it using the Engine and Gearbox Jack.
-- Remove the last engine/transmission connecting bolt -7 and 8-.
-- Pry up the transmission -3- from the engine at the same time push the torque converter -1- against the transmission in the -direction of the arrow- using for example a screwdriver -2-.
-- Carefully drain the transmission, ensure >>clearance<< to other components.
-- After the removing the transmission, secure the torque converter from falling. Refer to Figure.
-- Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
