Shift Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the gearshift knob and boot. Refer to GEARSHIFT KNOB, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the noise insulation and gearshift housing nuts -arrows-.

-- Remove the noise insulation housing -item Noise Insulation Housing.

-- Remove the entire air filter housing if it is located above the gearshift mechanism.

Vehicles with Gasoline Engine

Remove shift cable from transmission gearshift lever

-- Lift the clamp and remove the lock washer -1- for the shift cable from the gearshift lever -2-.

-- Remove the shift cable from the pin -arrow- from the gearshift lever -2-.

-- Disconnect the cable retainer on the selector relay lever from the selector cable. Refer to Figure.

-- If necessary, remove the selector relay lever. Refer to Figure.

-- Remove cable bracket from transmission (nut -1- and bolts -2-).

The cable bracket is tightened -2- times and is attached to the pins of the double bolt -1-.

-- Remove the exhaust pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER, GOLF FWD .

-- Remove the driveshaft for AWD vehicles. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .

-- Remove the heat shield under the gearshift mechanism.

-- Pivot the shifter housing downward and remove it with the shift cables.
