Selector Shaft Seal, Replacing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Press Piece - Shift Rod/Alternator: VW 423
- Pry Lever: 80-200
- Puller - Crankshaft/Power Steering Seal: T20143
- Not illustrated: Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm: VAG 1331A
Procedure
- The transmission is installed.
- Replace bolts that were tightened with an additional turn after removing them.
-- Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Push the cable retainer -1- forward in the -direction of the arrow A- and then lock in the -direction of the arrow B-. The cable retainer -1- is now detached from the cable -2-.
The cable bracket is not removed.
Do not dispose of the cable retainer after removal. It will be reinstalled.
-- Remove the cable retainer -1- from the selector lever using the Pry Lever: 80 - 200 from the selector lever and from the cable -2-. Do not remove the bolts -arrows-.
Position the cable retainer -1- ready for reinstallation.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- and the selector lever -1-.
Replace the bolt after removing.
-- Pry out the seal using the Puller - Crankshaft/Power Steering Seal: T20143/1 -arrow-.
-- Coat the outer edge and sealing lips on the new seal with transmission fluid.
-- Fill the space between the sealing/dust lip -arrow- halfway with sealing grease. Refer to the Parts Information for the correct sealing grease.
-- Drive in the seal using the Press Piece - Shift Rod/Alternator: VW423 all the way at the same time do not tilt the gasket.
- The closed side of the seal -arrow- faces outward.
-- Position the selector lever -1- on the shaft for the parking lock. Install new screw -arrow- and tighten.
Tightening specification: 10 Nm + 90°
-- Lock the transmission jack in the P lever position. The lever on the transmission must be moved all the way in the direction of the cable bracket -arrow- at the same time.
-- To check, rotate both front wheels in the same direction and at the same time until the parking lock engages audibly.
- The parking lock is engaged when it is not possible to rotate both front wheels in the same direction at the same time.
-- Thread the cable retainer -1- in the cable -2- and press it on the transmission jack on the transmission.
-- Turn the cable retainer -1- in the -direction of the arrow A- and release the tension on the spring -direction of the arrow B-. The cable -2- is adjusted.
Further installation is performed in reverse order of the removal.
-- Install the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
