General
-- If the transmission is replaced, transfer the transmission shift lever and the selector relay lever.
-- Use a thread cutter to carefully clean all threaded holes containing self-locking bolts to remove any locking fluid residue.
-- Replace self-locking bolts and nuts after removing them.
-- Make sure the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are installed inside the cylinder block. Install them if necessary.
Example image
If the alignment sleeves are missing, it will be difficult to shift, there will be clutch problems and the transmission may make noises (loose rattling).
Engage the intermediate plate on the sealing flange and push it onto the alignment sleeves -arrows-.
-- Check the release bearing for wear and if necessary replace the clutch slave cylinder with the release bearing. Removing and installing, refer to CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER WITH RELEASE BEARING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
AWD vehicles
-- Guide the bevel box and flange -C- past the driveshaft -A- and exhaust system -B-.
-- Then turn the transmission into its installation position using the spindles from the Transmission Support: 3282 .
Continuation for All
-- After the transmission is attached to the engine all around, remove the Engine and Gearbox Jack from the transmission.
-- In the next step, create the transmission assembly mounts connection.
Subframe
-- Install the transmission bracket with new bolts -arrows- and tighten the bolts.

Tightening Specification
60 Nm + 90° additional turn
-- Tighten the Engine Support Bridge: 10-222 A spindles until the transmission support touches the transmission mount to align the engine/transmission sub-assembly in installed position.
Example image
-- Install -new bolts- and tighten >>hand-tight<< so far as the bolt head makes contact.
AWD vehicles
-- Attach the driveshaft with the flexible disc to the bevel box flange -arrows-. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Attach heat shield -1- -arrows-. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
Continuation for All
-- Install the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITHOUT STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the pendulum support with new bolts. Refer to OVERVIEW - ASSEMBLY MOUNTS .
Example image
Threaded inserts (for example, "Heli Coil") are found in the pendulum support fastening holes on some transmissions. Refer to Figure.
AWD vehicles
-- Attach the transmission support while paying attention to the tightening sequence of bolts -1- and -2- Figure.
Continuation for All
-- Install the engine/transmission mount free of tension. Refer to ENGINE, INSTALLING .
-- Only remove the Engine Support Bridge: 10 - 222 A if all of the bolts for the assembly mount are tightened to the tightening specification.
-- Adjust the assembly mounts. Refer to ASSEMBLY MOUNTS, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .
The bolts "left assembly mounts on the transmission bracket" which were tightened >>hand tight<< are completely tightened only when adjusting the assembly mounts.
-- Only remove the Engine Support Bridge: 10 - 222 A if all of the bolts for the assembly mount are tightened to the tightening specification.
Drive Axles
-- Install the drive axles. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Attach the drive axle heat shield -arrows- (if equipped). Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
AWD vehicles
-- Check the gear oil in the bevel box. Refer to GEAR OIL IN BEVEL BOX, FILLING .
