Front Axle Differential Lock, Removing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Socket and Extended Bit: T10107 A
-- Switch the ignition off.
The right drive axle must be removed later in the procedure.
-- With the vehicle still standing on its wheels, loosen the front collar bolt -arrow- a maximum of 90°. Otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- If equipped, remove the drive axle heat shield -1- -arrows-. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the decoupling element.
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe from the engine and tie it up. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER, GOLF FWD .
-- Remove the connector -arrow- from the Differential Locks Control Module -J647-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266-.
-- Remove the pendulum support from the transmission. Refer to PENDULUM SUPPORT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Drain the oil for the front axle differential lock. Refer to FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK FLUID, DRAINING AND FILLING .
-- Install two bolts into the flange and counterhold the flange shaft with a tire iron -B- to remove the right flange shaft bolt -1- with a Socket.
-- Remove the upper bolts -arrows- that attach the front axle differential lock to the manual transmission.
-- Remove the lower bolts -arrows- that attach the front axle differential lock to the manual transmission.
-- Push the engine/transmission slightly toward the front (a second technician is needed or the Engine Support: T10533 ).
-- Carefully push the front axle differential lock off the manual transmission and remove it.
- Prevent connectors -arrow- from becoming damaged (illustrated here with front axle differential lock installed).
-- Pay attention to how the front axle differential lock is transported. Refer to Front Axle Differential Lock .
