Heater And A/C Unit, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Remove the engine cover if necessary. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If necessary, remove the air filter housing. Refer to the appropriate service information .

Vehicles with Refrigerant R134a

-- Discharge the refrigerant circuit. Refer to the appropriate service information .

Vehicles with Refrigerant R1234yf

-- Discharge the refrigerant circuit. Refer to REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT, DISCHARGING .

Continuation for All Vehicles

CAUTION:

Danger of frostbite due to refrigerant coming out under pressure.

Frostbite on the skin and other parts of the body is possible.

- Wear safety gloves.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Extract refrigerant and open the refrigerant circuit immediately.

- If more than 10 minutes have elapsed since evacuating the refrigerant and the refrigerant circuit was not opened, evacuate the refrigerant again. Evaporation can cause pressure to develop in the refrigerant circuit.

-- For all following procedures immediately seal all the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS6122  .

-- Remove the bolt -2-.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying the refrigerant lines by tearing the inner film.

- Never bend the refrigerant lines to a radius smaller than r = 100 mm.

-- Remove the refrigerant lines -1 and 3- and move to the side.

-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray :VAS6208  under the engine.

-- Mark the coolant hoses -2 and 3- so that they are reconnected later on the correct side. The heater core is only designed for a specific flow direction of the coolant.

-- Clamp off the coolant hoses with the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094  -1 and 4-.

CAUTION:

The cooling system may be under pressure. There is a risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

Scalding the skin and other parts of the body is possible.

- Wear safety gloves.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Reduce the pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a suitable towel and carefully opening it.

-- Lift the clamps.

-- Remove the coolant hoses.

-- Connect a section of hose to the upper connection.

-- Slide the compressed-air gun into the end of the hose.

-- Hold the drip tray under the lower connection and carefully blow the coolant out of the heater core using the compressed air gun.

-- Remove the instrument panel crossmember. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CROSSMEMBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Lift the rear footwell vent underneath the front seat and pull rearward to facilitate removing the footwell vent from the heater and A/C Unit.

-- Remove the rear footwell vent from the heater and A/C unit.

NOTE:

Ignore items -1 and 2-.

-- Disconnect the connector -3-.

NOTE:

Ignore items -1, 2, 3- and -4-.

-- Disconnect the connector -5-.

-- Cover the carpet and Airbag Control Module -J234- in the vehicle interior with a waterproof foil and absorbent paper.

-- Remove the condensation water drain hose -2- carefully from the heater and A/C unit -1-.

-- Remove the heater and A/C unit -1- from the bracket on the plenum chamber bulkhead.

-- Unhook the wiring harness -1- -arrows-.

-- Remove the cable channel -2- from the mounts -arrows-.

-- Remove the heater and A/C unit to the side.
