Refer to "Bevel Box, Removing" BEVEL BOX, REMOVING to get a list of the special tools needed.
Replace self-locking bolts and nuts after removing them.
Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn after removing them.
Install any cable ties that were loosened or cut off during removal at their same location.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
-- Coat the splines on transmission differential with Lubricating Grease for Clutch Plate Splines.
-- Insert the bevel box and press it against the transmission as far as the stop.
If the tooth position is incorrect (the bevel box cannot be pressed against the transmission), rotate at the flange shaft.
-- If the tooth position is correct and it is guided centered, the bevel box slides against the transmission all the way.
-- First tighten the bevel box with the new bolts -arrows- by hand and then finish tightening. Tightening specification. Refer to TRANSMISSION TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS .
-- Install the transmission mount. Pay attention to the component location and tightening sequence for the bolts. Refer to TRANSMISSION SUPPORT TO ENGINE AND BEVEL BOX .
Vehicles with Gasoline Engine
The next illustration shows the bevel box with the stub shaft instead of the flange shaft.
Vehicles with diesel engines
-- Fasten the flange shaft with a new bolt. Tightening specification: OVERVIEW - BEVEL BOX .
-- Install the driveshaft on the bevel box.
Seal in driveshaft flange -1- must not be damaged when removing and installing the bevel box. Replace the driveshaft if it is damaged.
-- Guide the Engine Support:T50015 -A- bevel box and driveshaft together by turning the spindle.
-- When guiding together pay attention that the markings -arrows- on the flexible disc align with the output flange of the bevel box.
-- Remove the Engine Support:T50015 .
-- Install the driveshaft on the bevel box -arrows-. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the driveshaft heat shield, if equipped.
-- Install the pendulum support with new bolts -1- on the transmission. Refer to PENDULUM SUPPORT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the exhaust system front section on the engine. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER, PASSAT, ARTEON .
-- Install the right drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the drive axle heat shield -1-, if equipped, on the bevel box (-arrows-). Refer to Drive Axle .
Further installation is performed in reverse order of the removal.
-- Check the gear oil level in bevel box. Refer to GEAR OIL, CHECKING LEVEL .
-- After installation check the oil level in the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .
-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to Noise Insulation .
