Safety Precautions When Working On Vehicles With An Internal Combustion Engine
There is a risk of poisoning due to the exhaust from the internal combustion engine.
Poisonous gases form when an internal combustion engine is running. Injury to the respiratory system and poisoning are possible.
- An exhaust extracting system must be used when an internal combustion engine is running in enclosed spaces.
There is a risk of injury if the internal combustion engine starts unexpectedly.
The engine may start unexpectedly in vehicles with the Start/Stop System activated. Parts of the body can be pinched or pulled in.
- Switch off the ignition and electrical equipment.
- Place the vehicle key and other start authorization systems (such as smartphones) outside of the vehicle interior.
There is a risk of injury when the system is in drive ready mode.
It is difficult to identify when drive ready mode is active in hybrid vehicles. Parts of the body can be pinched or pulled in.
- Switch off the ignition and electrical equipment.
- Place the vehicle key and other start authorization systems (such as smartphones) outside of the vehicle interior.
There is a risk of injury due to the exhaust system components
It is possible to injure hands and other parts of the body due to hot and sharp-edged components in the exhaust system.
- Allow the exhaust system to cool.
- Wear safety gloves.
Risk of injury due to hot condensation and particles in the exhaust system.
There may be hot condensation and/or particles in the exhaust system. Injuries to the eyes, skin, or respiratory system and poisoning are possible.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Switch on an exhaust extracting system in enclosed spaces.
Health risk due to chemical materials in the exhaust system components.
Health risk due to disassembled components of the exhaust gas treatment.
- Do not cut, saw, or open components of the exhaust treatment system.
Risk of injury due to electrocution
The ignition system is under high voltage when the engine is running. It is possible to be electrocuted by touching the ignition system.
- Do not touch ignition wires when the engine is running or turning at cranking speed.
The reducing agent increases the risk of injury
Reducing agents may cause eye and skin irritation as well as injury to the respiratory system and possible poisoning.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Use personal protective equipment.
- Switch on an exhaust extracting system in enclosed spaces.
