Cooling System, Checking Coolant Concentration
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Cooling System Tester - Adapter:V.A.G 1274/8
- Cooling System Tester:V.A.G 1274B
Tip
It is necessary to check the coolant concentration to determine if there is air in the coolant system. If there is air in the cooling system, the coolant level may drop too far through the running time.
The cooling system may be under pressure. There is a risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
Scalding the skin and other parts of the body is possible.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a suitable towel and carefully opening it.
-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow-.
-- Check the coolant level:
Requirement
- The coolant level must be approximately 5 mm above the MAX marking or right at the MAX marking.
-- Install the Cooling System Tester - Adapter:V.A.G 1274/8 -2- on the coolant expansion tank -1-.
-- Connect the Cooling System Tester:V.A.G 1274B -3- to the adapter -2-.
-- Operate the hand pump several times to create a pressure of 1.5 bar (21.76 psi).
-- Monitor the coolant level in the coolant expansion tank.
If the Coolant Level in the Coolant Expansion Tank Drops More Than 30 mm, This Means That There Is Air in the Cooling System.
-- Release the pressure at the cooling system tester -3-.
-- Remove the adapter -2- from the coolant expansion tank.
-- Screw open the coolant expansion tank cap.
Vehicles with Diesel Engine
-- Perform the "Cooling system, bleeding" function using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to Diagnostic Entries .
Vehicles with a Gasoline Engine
-- Let the engine run at idle until the radiator fan turns on.
Continuation for All Vehicles
-- Repeat the coolant concentration check.
If the coolant level in the coolant expansion tank drops lower than 30 mm. the cooling system is correctly filled.
Continuation
-- Release the pressure at the cooling system tester -3-.
-- Remove the adapter -2- from the coolant expansion tank.
