General Information
The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission servicing. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
Some general repair information for individual repair procedures that appear many times throughout the service information is summarized here. They apply to this repair information.
Transmission Notes
- Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the transmission covers are removed or if there is no transmission fluid inside the transmission.
- Thoroughly clean the connection points and the area around them first, and then loosen them.
- When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the transmission.
- Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them so that they do not become contaminated. Use foil and paper. Only use lint-free cloths.
- Carefully cover or seal opened components if repairs are not performed immediately.
- Only install clean parts: remove the replacement parts from their packaging just before installing them.
- Do not let the engine run or tow the vehicle when the oil pan is removed or when there is no ATF in the transmission.
- Check the oil level after installing.
Sealant
- Clean the housing separating surfaces thoroughly before applying the sealant.
- Apply the Sealant (refer to the appropriate Electronic Parts Information) evenly and not too thickly.
- Sealant must not go into the bleed holes.
Oil
- The final drive and all-wheel drive clutch have separate oil circuits.
- The hypoid chamber is filled with hypoid oil and the clutch chambers are filled with high-performance oil for the multi-plate clutch.
- Oil for the hypoid chamber and clutch is available as a replacement part. Refer to the appropriate Electronic Parts Information.
- Do not mix additives into the transmission fluid.
- Do not reuse drained oil.
- Be very careful when handling oil. Dispose of drained oil correctly.
Circlips
- Do not stretch the circlips.
- Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
