Windshield, Removing And Installing: Removing

CAUTION:

Risk of injury to the hands and eyes from glass fragments.

Getting cut is possible.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Wear safety gloves.

NOTE:

If the window glass is to be reused, make sure that the electrical connections for the window defogger are not damaged.

-- If equipped, remove the Rain/Light Recognition Sensor --. Refer to Driver Assistance Systems Front Camera -R242-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If equipped, remove the Driver Assistance Systems Front Camera -R242-. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .

-- Lower the headliner near the windshield. Refer to HEADLINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

The headliner can now be lowered far enough so that the windshield can be cut out without damaging the headliner.

-- Remove the plenum chamber cover. Refer to PLENUM CHAMBER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the drip rail. Refer to DRIP RAIL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

For Vehicles with Windshield Defogger 

-- Remove the hex nut -6- and attach the wire -5- to the windshield.

-- Release and disconnect the connectors -1- and -3-.

-- Attach the wires -2- and -4- to the windshield.

-- Slide the Flush Bonded Window Kit - Instrument Panel Cover: VAG1474/8  between the windshield and the instrument panel.

-- Pull the cutting wire end -1- through the adhesive inside the vehicle interior using the Flush Bonded Window Kit - Awl: VAG1474/2  .

-- Secure the inner cutting wire end from being pulled out using the Bonded Window Tool Kit - Pull Handle: VAG1351/1  -item 3-.

-- Insert the cutting wire -2- into the window glass flange using the small tube -1-.

-- Place the cutting wire -2- around the windshield.

-- Make sure that the cutting wire -2- is inserted under windshield at the corners.

-- Secure the wire ends -4- on the Cutting Tool for Bonded Windows: VAS6452  -item 1-.

-- Place the cutting wire around the reel device suction cups -arrow-.

-- While cutting free, press the cutting wire against the windshield using a plastic wedge -2- in order to have clearance on the window glass flange and the instrument panel.

-- Position the Cutting Tool for Bonded Windows: VAS6452  in the lower corners of the windshield.

-- Move the left Cutting Tool for Bonded Windows: VAS6452  from "position I" through "position III" in sequence and cut the windshield out.

-- Move the right Cutting Tool for Bonded Windows: VAS6452  from "position IV" through "position VI" in sequence and cut the windshield out.

A second technician is required for the rest of the removal procedure.

-- Remove the windshield with two Double Suction Lifters: VAG1344  .
