General Repair Information

The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repairs.

General information that applies to various different repair procedures is listed here instead of repeating it multiple times throughout the information. They apply to this repair information.

Tools

A complete list of special tools and workshop equipment used in the repair information can be found at the beginning of each repair article and in the "Special Tools and Workshop Equipment" folder.

Uncertainties often exist on smaller screws with lower tightening specifications. For these bolts the Torque Wrench 1783 - 2-10Nm:VAG1783 can be used.

Transmission

Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the transmission fluid pan is removed or if there is no transmission fluid inside the transmission.
Thoroughly clean the connection points and the area around them first, and then loosen them.
When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the transmission.
Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them so that they do not become contaminated. Use foil and paper. Only use lint-free cloths.
Only install clean parts: remove the replacement parts from their packaging just before installing them.
Carefully cover or seal opened components if repairs are not performed immediately.
When the transmission is removed, secure the torque converter so that it cannot fall out.
After installing, check the ATF level and fill. Refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .

Before beginning any repair work on the automatic transmission, determine the cause of the damage using "Guided Fault Finding" .
