Transmission, Removing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Brief Description

The transmission is removed downward separately.

The battery tray, the air filter housing and the starter are removed. The engine and transmission are supported before the left assembly mount is loosened.

The pendulum support is removed and both control arms are detached.

The left drive axle is completely removed.

The right drive axle is removed from the transmission, but remains installed in the wheel bearing housing and is simply tied up to the side.

Removing 

-- With the vehicle still resting on its wheels, loosen the left bolt -arrow- a maximum of 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. Refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .

NOTE:

Do not place the vehicle on floor after loosening the bolt.

-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.

-- Lift the vehicle with all four lifting points of the hoist at the same height.

-- Remove the left front wheel.

-- Remove the air filter housing with the air duct hose. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the battery and the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Use the : 80-200  to pry the selector lever cable -3- out of the selector lever -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and tie up the cable bracket -1- together with the selector lever cable.

-- Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Release and disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- from the transmission.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- for the wire bracket -3-.

-- Place a lint-free cloth on to transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb escaping coolant.

NOTE:

The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully open it before removing the coolant hoses.

-- Clamp off the coolant hoses -1- using the : 3094  -3-.

-- Open the hose clamps -2- and remove the coolant hoses.

-- Seal off the transmission fluid cooler connections with suitable sealing plugs taken from the : VAS6122  .

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -1, 2, and 3-.

The bolt -2- is located in the starter opening.

-- Remove the front noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the nut for the ground threaded connection -arrow- from the left front longitudinal member.

-- Remove the wire -1- from the threaded pin.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- and remove the ground wire -3-.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and push the bracket -1- with the wires toward the radiator grille.

-- Remove the left drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Release and disconnect the connector -1- from the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266-.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- from the right control arm.

-- Remove the control arm from the ball joint.

-- Loosen the right drive axle from the transmission using the : T10161  -1-.

-- Secure the right drive axle to the suspension strut using a : T10038  .

Do not damage the shaft protective coating while doing so.

-- Remove the bolts -2-.

-- Remove the drive axle heat shield -1- in the direction of -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -1, 2, and 3-.

-- Remove the pendulum support.

-- Remove the six nuts for the torque converter -1- through the opening in the intermediate plate.

-- To do this, turn the engine 60° further in the direction of engine rotation at the belt pulley/vibration damper.

NOTE:

If all six torque converter nuts are not removed, the torque converter will be pulled out when removing the transmission from the engine!

-- Fasten the : T10346  or the : T10346/1  -1- with the bolt -arrow- in the center subframe threaded hole.

-arrow- = M 8 x 20 collar bolt

-- Secure the : 3300A  -2- on the Bracket.

-- Use the spindle on the : 3300A  to push the engine and transmission approximately 30 mm forward.

NOTE:

Position the : 3300A  on the cylinder block, and not on the engine oil pan.

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Use the support device to lightly pretension the engine and transmission.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the transmission assembly mount -1-.

-- Then lower the engine/transmission up to dimension -a- using the support device.

Dimension -a- = Approximately 65 mm

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -5, 6, and 7-.

-- Mount the : 3282  -3- on the : VAS6931  .

-- Install the : 3282/34  -4- in the transmission threads.

-- Lock the : 3282/049  -2- and Drift -5- on the transmission -1-.

Align the : 3282  so that the spindle -arrow B- faces forward and the spindle -arrow A- faces to the right in the direction of travel.

-- Support the engine and the transmission. Do not lift.

The transmission is separated from the engine in this position.

-- Remove the last engine/transmission connecting bolts -4, 8, and 9-.

-- Press the transmission off of the engine, and at the same time press the torque converter out of the engine drive plate.

-- Guide the transmission past the subframe when lowering it. Re-adjust the : 3282  slightly, if necessary.

NOTE:

Pay attention to the transmission ventilation.

Pay attention to the torque converter.

The torque converter is removed together with the transmission. To prevent the torque converter from falling out, secure it with wire -A-, for example.
