Transmission, Removing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon and 2019 Volkswagen Arteon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Removing 

-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector shaft lever -2- using for example an open end wrench.

-- Disconnect the connector -6- from the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125- and free up the wire at the bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -5- from the cable bracket -4-. Do not remove the lock washer -3-.

-- Disengage the selector lever cable from the clip -arrow-.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

So that the cable is not damaged when removing and installing the transmission, use, for example, a cable tie to secure the cable on the body in a suitable position.

NOTE:

The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Before removing the coolant hoses on the transmission, cover the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow- with a cloth and carefully open.

-- Place a lint-free cloth on to transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb escaping coolant.

-- Clamp off the coolant hoses with : 3094  and remove the hoses from the ATF cooler.

-- Seal the coolant hoses and connections with suitable plugs taken from the : VAS6122  .

-- Remove the Transmission Coolant Valve -N488- from the transmission. Refer to OVERVIEW - ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP .

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the upper bolts -arrows- connecting the transmission to the engine, for example, with a 12-point flex head socket wrench.

-- Support the engine and transmission in their installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the connector from the transmission as follows Push the retainer -1- in the direction of the -arrow-, open the hook -2- and then remove the connector -3- from the transmission.

Remove the subframe. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .

-- Remove the right and left drive axle from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Secure both drive axles to the suspension strut using the : T10038  .

Do not damage the surface protection of the shafts.

AWD Vehicles 

-- Remove the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, REMOVING .

For All Vehicles: 

-- Remove the six converter nuts -arrow-.

-- To do so, turn the engine an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation using the : T10172A  .

NOTE:

If all six torque converter nuts are not removed, the torque converter will be pulled out when removing the transmission from the engine!

Use the : T03003  to counterhold at the belt pulley/vibration damper when loosening the torque converter nuts.

-- Remove the three engine/transmission connecting bolts -right arrows-. The engine/transmission connecting bolt -left arrow- remains installed until the transmission is completely removed.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from the left subframe mount for the transmission.

-- Lower the engine/transmission as far as dimension -a- using the spindles on the : 10-222A  .

Dimension -a- = Approximately 70 mm

The transmission is separated from the engine in this position.

-- Place the : 3282  -A- on the : VAS6931  -B-.

Install the : 3282  on the Transmission as follows with the Mounting Elements:

-- Install the : 3282/29  in the rear hole for the pendulum support bolt on the transmission.

-- Support the transmission by carefully lifting it using the Engine and Gearbox Jack.

-- Remove the last engine/transmission connecting bolt.

-- Pry up the transmission -3- from the engine at the same time push the torque converter -1- against the transmission in the direction of -arrow- using for example a screwdriver -2-.

-- Carefully drain the transmission, ensure >>clearance<< to other components.

-- After the removing the transmission, secure the torque converter from falling. Refer to Fig 6.

-- Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
