Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the ashtray and center console cover for the selector mechanism. Refer to FRONT CENTER CONSOLE STORAGE COMPARTMENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the selector mechanism to the vehicle wiring harness.

-- If equipped, remove the rear center console air duct vent. Refer to OVERVIEW - AIR ROUTING AND AIR DISTRIBUTION IN VEHICLE INTERIOR .

-- Remove the engine cover with the air filter. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- To remove the selector lever cable from the transmission first release the cable in direction of -arrows 1- and then remove it from the cable mounting bracket in direction of -arrow 2-.

NOTE:

Do not use pliers because the tabs on the cable bracket could break off.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Pry the cable -1- off the selector lever -3-, for example, using a wrench -2-.

2.5L Engine

-- Disconnect the selector lever cable -1- from the bracket -arrow- on the transmission.

1.8L and 2.0L Engine

-- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the bracket -arrow- on the ATF cooler.

Continuation for All 

-- Raise the vehicle.

-- Remove the front and rear tunnel braces from the body. Refer to TUNNEL BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter. Refer to [For engine(s) DDSB, DDSA] Exhaust System, Emission Controls .

-- Disconnect the center and rear mufflers from the retaining loops and tie them to the body using for example a wire. Refer to [For engine(s) DDSB, DDSA] Exhaust System, Emission Controls .

-- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the selector mechanism. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - UNDERBODY TRIM PANELS .

NOTE:

A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.

If equipped, remove the bracket with Access/Start System Antenna 1 in Vehicle Interior -R138- from the selector mechanism front stud bolts.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- in the vehicle interior.

-- Remove the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable and selector housing downward.

NOTE:

The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.

To do this, remove the four bolts -item  ) OVERVIEW - SELECTOR MECHANISM - List Item: Bolt.

Remove the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable inside the vehicle interior in the direction of -arrow-.

The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable. Refer to the Parts Information.
