General Repair Information: Notes
The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
General information that applies to various different repair procedures is listed here instead of repeating it multiple times throughout the manual. They apply to this Service Information.
Guided Fault Finding, OBD and Test Instruments
- Before servicing the transmission determine the cause of damage as close as possible using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Special Tools
For a complete list of special tools used in the Service Information. Refer to Workshop Equipment and Special Tools.
Transmission
Always make sure that no dirt or contaminants enter an >>open<< transmission. Any dirt that enters can cause transmission failure, especially if the DSG Transmission Mechatronic -J743- and/or the transmission fluid pump are >>open<<.
- Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the transmission cover is removed or if there is no transmission fluid inside the transmission.
- Thoroughly clean the connection points and the area around them first, and then loosen them.
- When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the transmission.
Circlips
- Do not stretch the circlips.
- Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
Transmission Fluid, Environmental and Disposal Regulations.
The quality of transmission fluid is crucial to transmission function.
- Shake the fluid containers before opening.
- Do not mix additives into the transmission fluid. Do not fill with a different transmission fluid.
- The drained transmission fluid must not be used again.
- Dispose of drained transmission fluid correctly.
- Follow all legal environmental and waste disposal regulations.
- Pay attention to the information on the fluid packaging.
Fluid Drain and Check Plug
A plastic overflow tube is located behind this screw -arrow- (with 8 mm hex socket head). Its length determines the fluid level in the transmission.
