Removing
-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector shaft lever -2- using for example an open end wrench.
-- Disconnect the connector -6- from the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125- and free up the wire at the bracket.
-- Remove the bolts -5- from the cable bracket -4-. Do not remove the lock washer -3-.
-- Disengage the selector lever cable from the clip -arrow-.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
So that the cable is not damaged when removing and installing the transmission, use, for example, a cable tie to secure the cable on the body in a suitable position.
The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
Before removing the coolant hoses on the transmission, cover the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow- with a cloth and carefully open.
-- Place a lint-free cloth on to transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb escaping coolant.
-- Clamp off the coolant hoses with : 3094 and remove the hoses from the ATF cooler.
-- Seal the coolant hoses and connections with suitable plugs taken from the : VAS6122 .
-- Remove the Transmission Coolant Valve -N488- from the transmission. Refer to OVERVIEW - ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP .
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the upper bolts -arrows- connecting the transmission to the engine, for example, with a 12-point flex head socket wrench.
-- Support the engine and transmission in their installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the connector from the transmission as follows Push the retainer -1- in the direction of the -arrow-, open the hook -2- and then remove the connector -3- from the transmission.
Remove the subframe. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .
-- Remove the right and left drive axle from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Secure both drive axles to the suspension strut using the : T10038 .
Do not damage the surface protection of the shafts.
AWD Vehicles
-- Remove the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, REMOVING .
For All Vehicles:
-- Remove the six converter nuts -arrow-.
-- To do so, turn the engine an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation using the : T10172A .
If all six torque converter nuts are not removed, the torque converter will be pulled out when removing the transmission from the engine!
Use the : T03003 to counterhold at the belt pulley/vibration damper when loosening the torque converter nuts.
-- Remove the three engine/transmission connecting bolts -right arrows-. The engine/transmission connecting bolt -left arrow- remains installed until the transmission is completely removed.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from the left subframe mount for the transmission.
-- Lower the engine/transmission as far as dimension -a- using the spindles on the : 10-222A .
Dimension -a- = Approximately 70 mm
The transmission is separated from the engine in this position.
-- Place the : 3282 -A- on the : VAS6931 -B-.
Install the : 3282 on the Transmission as follows with the Mounting Elements:
- The Engine and Gearbox Jack with Transmission Support is positioned under the transmission -1- so that the spindle -left arrow- points forward in the direction of travel.
- The spindle -right arrow- points in the direction of travel to the left.
- The Mounts -C- are positioned in the groove surrounding the transmission fluid pan as shown.
- The Pin -D- locks in the recess on the front right side of the transmission.
-- Install the : 3282/29 in the rear hole for the pendulum support bolt on the transmission.
-- Support the transmission by carefully lifting it using the Engine and Gearbox Jack.
-- Remove the last engine/transmission connecting bolt.
-- Pry up the transmission -3- from the engine at the same time push the torque converter -1- against the transmission in the direction of -arrow- using for example a screwdriver -2-.
-- Carefully drain the transmission, ensure >>clearance<< to other components.
-- After the removing the transmission, secure the torque converter from falling. Refer to Fig 6.
-- Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
