Procedure 

NOTE:

With lock carrier installed, engine is removed downward with transmission and subframe.

During installation, cable ties must be installed at the same location.

WARNING:

Risk of vehicle tipping over with engine removed.

  • Secure vehicle. Luggage compartment must be empty for this.

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under very high pressure.

  • Reduce the fuel pressure down to residual pressure before opening high pressure area of the fuel injection system.

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to electronic components.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable -arrow-. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Discharge the refrigerant circuit. Refer to REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT, DISCHARGING WITH SERVICE STATION .

-- Remove the lock carrier cover -3-. Refer to LOCK CARRIER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING . .

-- Carefully pull the engine cover off the bolts one after the other -arrows-. Do not remove the engine cover on one side or in a jerking manner.

WARNING:

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

  • The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
  • Cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and then open it slowly to release the pressure.

-- Open the coolant reservoir cap.

-- Remove the left and right front wheels.

-- Remove the left and right front wheel housing liner -1-. Refer to WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Remove the noise insulations -1- and -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .

NOTE:

Collect escaping coolant in a clean container for disposal.

-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray VAS6208 under engine.

-- Remove the drain plug -1-, drain the coolant.

-- Lift the clip -2- and disconnect the coolant hose from under the right of the radiator.

-- Loosen the clamp -arrow-, remove the coolant hose from the left front coolant pipe and let the coolant drain out.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Charge Air pressure Sensor -G31- /Intake Air Temperature Sensor -G42- and free up the wire.

NOTE:

Ignore -item 2-.

-- Remove the nut -arrow- on the right longitudinal member and free up the ground wires.

-- Disconnect the coolant fan connectors -1, 2- to do this, push the clamp to the rear -arrow- and push the release down.

-- Free up the wiring harness.

-- Loosen the hose clamp from the air guide pipe -arrow-, remove the air duct hose and move it to the side.

-- Remove the left and right bolt -1- and nut -3- and the lock carrier brace -2-.

NOTE:

Follow the rules for clean working conditions when working on the transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS, GUIDELINES .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the separating points.

-- Disconnect the ATF-wires -arrow- from the right separating point on the Engine.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove the air guide -1- and intermediate flange -2- from the air filter housing.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Mass Airflow Sensor -G70-.

-- Remove the air guide hose with Mass Air Flow Sensor -G70- by loosening hose clamp -2- and opening clips -arrows-.

-- Disconnect the vacuum line -1-.

-- Remove the air filter housing, disconnect and free up the cable from the backside of the connector -2- at the Air Filter Bypass Door Valve -N275-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of contamination.

-- Loosen the clamps and remove the fuel hoses.

  1. Blue fuel hose
  2. White fuel hose
  3. Yellow fuel hose

-- Loosen the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose from the coolant pipe.

-- Loosen the clamp -3- and remove the air guide hose.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging refrigerant lines and hoses.

  • Do not stretch, kink or bend refrigerant lines and hoses.

-- Remove bolt -2-, remove the refrigerant line from the A/C Compressor and set aside.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

NOTE:

Ignore -items 1 and 3-.

-- Lift up the retaining clips to remove the coolant hose -3- from the coolant reservoir.

NOTE:

Ignore -items 1, 2 - and -arrows-.

-- Remove the bolts -1- and nuts -2- and -arrow- and remove the strut tower brace.

-- Remove the plenum chamber cover -2-, refer to PLENUM CHAMBER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Release the retainer -arrow A- and open the cover -arrow B-.

-- Remove the nuts -1 through 4- for the electrical wires.

-- Remove the connector -5- from the bracket and disconnect it.

-- Remove the bolt -6- and the Terminal 30 Wire Junction 2 -TV22- from the tower brace -arrow-.

-- Disconnect the connector from the Brake Booster Pressure Sensor -G294- -arrow-.

-- Remove the foam piece -1-.

-- Release the retainers from the wheel housing side using a 5.5 mm wrench -item 1- and remove the wiring bushing -2- upward.

-- Free up the wiring harness -3- to the generator and starter using the Pry Lever 80-200.

-- Open the catch -arrow-, free up the wiring harness and open the wiring duct -1-.

-- Disconnect the coolant hose -1-.

-- Disconnect the vacuum connection -2- from the plenum chamber bulkhead by remove the vacuum hose -3- on the back side -arrow-.

-- Remove refrigerant lines -A, C- from refrigerant line with Inner Heat Exchanger -B-, refer to REFRIGERANT LINE WITH INNER HEAT EXCHANGER , also see UNDERHOOD COMPONENTS .

-- Remove the nut -3- and the bolt -2-.

-- Remove the filler neck -1- with the filler tube from the washer fluid reservoir and the opening in the body -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -1, 2 and 4- and remove the E-box cover -3- in the engine compartment -arrow-.

-- Remove the nut -5- and free up the ground cable.

-- Release the retainers -A arrows- and remove the engine control module -arrow B-.

-- If equipped disconnect the connector -2-.

-- Disconnect the connectors -4- and the wire -3-.

-- Open the tabs -arrow- and Fuse Panel B -SB- -1-.

-- Disengage the engine wiring harness from the E-box and free it up.

-- Release the retainers -A arrows- and remove the wiring bushing -1- upward -arrow B-.

-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the ground cable.

-- Lay the wiring harness on the engine and secure the engine control module so that it cannot fall.

-- Remove the nut -2- for the front exhaust pipe from above.

NOTE:

The nut -1- and bolt -3- will be removed later.

-- Disconnect the electrical connectors -1- at the left and right on the front speed sensors -2-.

-- If installed: disconnect the connector -1- from the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- and from the Right Front Level Control System Sensor -G289- and free up the wires -arrow-.

-- Free up the connector -2- on the bracket by pulling the retainer back -arrow A- and turning the connector approximately 90° clockwise -arrow B-.

-- Free up the electrical wiring -3- and brake line -4- on the bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -1- and secure the brake caliper, with the brake hose still connected, inside the wheel housing.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging brake pistons.

  • Do not operate brake pedal with brake caliper removed.

-- Remove the nut -2- and the bolt -1-.

-- Remove the upper control arm upward from the wheel bearing housing -arrows-.

-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.

-- Remove the left and right stabilizer bar bolts -1-.

-- Remove the left and right nuts -3-.

NOTE:

The bolts -2- will be removed later.

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

  • Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace were not installed correctly.
  • Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or the subframe crossbrace, for example, by a floor jack or similar device.

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

NOTE:

Ignore -item 1-.

-- Remove the left and right bolts -arrows- and the heat shield -1-.

-- Release the safety catch -arrow-, push the retainer down and disconnect the connector from -2- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.

-- Free up the wiring harness.

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and the push the splines together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Loosen the threaded connections -arrows-, slide the clamping sleeve to the rear and remove the front exhaust pipe.

-- Remove the nuts -1- and bolt -3- and then remove the front exhaust pipe.

-- Remove the ball socket -2- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever 80-200.

-- Free up the selector lever cable.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Next fasten mounting elements to scissor lift table by hand.

-- Position the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B horizontally.

-- Guide the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B under the engine/transmission subassembly.

WARNING:

The subframe could cause an accident if it is not secured.

  • Do not loosen the subframe bolts -2- and -3-.

-- Remove the left and right subframe bolts -1-.

-- Attach mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS6131/13 at the left and right on the front of the subframe as shown in the illustration.

-- Ensure threaded spindles are completely installed.

-- Attach the mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS6131/10 at the left and right rear on the subframe crossbrace front connecting points as shown in the illustration.

-- Rotate the mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come into contact with the mounting points.

-- Attach mounting element base plates to Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B and tighten to 20 Nm.

-- Mark the location of the subframe to the longitudinal members using a felt-tip pen.

-- Remove the left and right subframe bolts -2- and -3- in a diagonal sequence in stages.

NOTE:

The bolts -1- have already been removed.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Remove the left and right bolts -2-.

NOTE:

The bolts -1- and nuts -3- have already been removed.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging hose and wiring connections as well as engine compartment.

  • Make sure all the hoses and lines between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.
  • Carefully guide the engine/transmission sub-assembly with subframe out of engine compartment while lowering.

-- Lower engine/transmission assembly.

-- Remove the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B with engine/transmission assembly from under the vehicle.
