Selector Lever Cable, Checking And Adjusting
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm: VAG1331
Always Adjust the Selector Lever Cable If:
- The selector lever cable was removed from the transmission.
- The engine and (or) transmission were removed and installed.
- Sections of the subframe mount were removed and installed.
- The cable itself or the selector mechanism was removed and installed.
- The engine/transmission position was changed, for example, were installed without tension.
Checking
-- Move the selector lever to >>P<<.
-- Remove the air filter housing:
- Gasoline engine. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Diesel engine. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.
-- Move the selector lever from >>P<< to >>S<< and back to >>P<< several times.
- The selector lever must have ease of movement.
-- Adjust the selector lever cable.
Adjusting
-- Move the selector lever into "P".
Shifting the Gearshift Lever into "P".
The transmission gearshift lever must be pushed >>all the way toward the rear<<.
-- To check, pull the gearshift lever forward.
-- Then push the gearshift lever >>to the rear<< -arrow-.
"P" is in the Second Detent.
Raise the vehicle to make sure the transmission is in "P" (parking lock is engaged). The front wheels must not turn together in any direction.
The transmission is also in "P" if the vehicle does not move with wheels spinning freely.
-- Install the cable with the loose adjusting screw -arrow- and the new lock washer -A and B-, if they were removed earlier.
-- Lightly tap the handle on the selector lever back and forth but do not move it out of "P" under any circumstances.
-- Tighten the adjusting screw -arrow-.
This ends the adjustment.
