Engine, Removing: Procedure
With lock carrier installed, engine is removed downward together with the transmission and the subframe.
During installation, cable ties must be installed at the same location.
Risk of vehicle tipping over with engine removed.
- Secure vehicle. Luggage compartment must be empty for this.
-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.
Danger of causing damage to electronic components.
- Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Turn off the ignition.
-- Disconnect the battery ground cable -2-, refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTINGBattery Safety Label .
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Extract the power steering oil from the reservoir with the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN 372500.
All Vehicles:
-- Carefully pull the engine cover off the bolts one after the other -arrows-. Do not remove the engine cover on one side or in a jerking manner.
-- Remove the lock carrier cover -2-, refer to LOCK CARRIER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
- The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
- Cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and then open it slowly to release the pressure.
-- Remove the cap -arrow- from the coolant reservoir.
-- Remove the front left and right wheel housing liners completely, refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the noise insulations -1 and 2-, refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right underbody panel -2-, refer to UNDERBODY TRIM PANELS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right lower longitudinal member, refer to LOCK CARRIER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
AWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the propshaft, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Remove the coolant hose from the left front coolant pipe by loosening the hose clamp -2- and letting the coolant drain out.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow-, remove the coolant hose from the left lower coolant pipe and let the coolant drain out.
All Vehicles:
-- Free up the wire for the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on Radiator Outlet -G83- -1-.
-- Lift the clamp and let the coolant drain out to remove the right lower coolant hose -2- from the radiator.
-- Remove the right lower coolant hose -arrow- by lifting the clamp and draining the coolant.
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Clamp off the hydraulic hoses -1 and 2- from the hydraulic fluid reservoir using the Hose Clamps - Up To 25 mm 3094.
Place a cloth underneath to catch the draining hydraulic fluid.
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow- and remove the hydraulic hose.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS 6122.
All Vehicles:
-- Open the clamps -arrows- and remove the air guide pipe -1-.
There is a risk of contamination.
- Follow the guidelines for cleanliness when working on the fuel supply system, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Loosen the hose clamps -1, 2 and 3- and mark the fuel hoses for installation later and then remove them.
-- Remove the upper right longitudinal member -2-, refer to OVERVIEW - LOCK CARRIER .
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Remove the air filter housing -1- upward.
-- Remove the coolant hose -arrow- by lifting the clamp.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Remove the connector -2- from the bracket, disconnect it and free up the wire.
All vehicles:
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose from the coolant pipe.
-- Loosen the clamp -1- and remove the air duct tube.
-- Turn the tensioning element clockwise using the TORX Socket - T60 T40087 -arrow- to release the tension on the ribbed belt.
-- Remove the ribbed belt from the A/C compressor ribbed belt pulley and stop the tensioner with the Locking Pin T10060 A.
-- Loosen the clamp -3- and remove the air duct tube.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
Vehicles through MY 2013 Without Dynamic Steering:
-- Loosen the hose clamp -2- and remove the hydraulic hose.
-- Remove the bolts -1-, pull out the hydraulic line and pivot it downward.
Vehicles through MY 2013 with Dynamic Steering:
-- Remove the union nut -1- and then remove the hydraulic line from the power steering pump.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -3- and remove the hydraulic hose.
All Vehicles:
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS 6122.
-- Remove the seal -1- near the plenum chamber cover.
-- Remove the plenum chamber cover -2-, refer to PLENUM CHAMBER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release the cover -2- and swivel it to the side -arrow-.
-- Remove the nut -4- and free up the positive cable.
-- Remove the nut -3- and remove the positive cable -1-.
-- Open the tabs -1 and 3- and swivel the positive terminal -2- out of the mount.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the engine compartment E-box cover -1- at right.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- and free up the wires.
-- Release the retainers -arrows- and remove the relay carrier with the fuse panel -4-.
-- Open the release -5- and remove the condenser -6-.
-- Disengage and free up the engine wiring harness on the engine compartment E-box at right and then lay it on the engine.
-- Disconnect the vacuum hose -1- leading to the brake booster.
-- Remove the coolant hose -2- by lifting the retaining clip.
-- Remove the tower brace, refer to TOWER BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Open the clamps -arrows-, remove the Engine Control Module -J623- -2- and lay it on the engine.
-- Remove the bolt -4- for the battery positive cable -3- and the bolt -2- for the ground cable -1- and free up the cables.
Vehicles with FWD:
-- Free up the coolant hoses at the left and right -arrows-.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then the crossmember for the torque support.
Vehicles with Parking Heater:
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the mount.
All Vehicles:
-- Version I of electrohydraulic engine mount solenoid valve only: Free up and disconnect the connector -1- for the Right Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N145-.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Remove the connector -1- from the bracket and disconnect it.
-- Free up the wiring harness -3- from the cylinder head cover.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- and free up the wire.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Engine Temperature Control Sensor -G694- and free up the wire.
-- Version II of electrohydraulic engine mount solenoid valves only: Disconnect the connector -3- from the Left Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Oil Pressure Regulation Valve -N428- and free up the wire.
-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Transmission Coolant Valve -N488-.
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
- Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.
-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).
-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.
-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.
-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- and free up the wires on the transmission.
-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.
All Vehicles:
Refrigerant can cause serious personal injury.
- Do not open the air conditioning refrigerant circuit.
-- Remove the connector -1- from the bracket and disconnect it.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Free up the wiring harness and place it on the A/C compressor.
All Vehicles:
Risk of damaging refrigerant lines and hoses.
- Do not stretch, kink or bend refrigerant lines and hoses.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-. Then remove the A/C compressor from the bracket and tie it up on the left side.
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Remove the connectors from bracket and disconnect:
- for Left/Right Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144- / -N145- (Version I solenoid valves only)
- For the Servotronic Solenoid Valve -N119-
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and free up the ground cable on the left longitudinal member.
-- Remove nut -3- and disconnect the connector -2-.
All Vehicles:
-- Disconnect the left and right connector -arrow- from the front vehicle level sensor -G78- / -G289- and free up the wires.
-- Disconnect the connectors -arrow- at the left and right on the front speed sensors.
-- Remove the brake caliper and with the brake hose still connected, inside the wheel housing using wire, refer to BRAKE CALIPER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging brake pistons.
- Do not operate brake pedal with brake caliper removed.
-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the nut -2- and the bolt -1-.
-- Remove the upper control arm upward from the wheel bearing housing -arrows-.
-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the left and right stabilizer bar bolt -1-.
-- Remove the left and right nuts -3-.
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace, refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The suspension components could be damaged.
- Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear push them upward, refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Squeeze the retainers -arrows A- and pull the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in direction of -arrow B-.
-- Disengage the rear section of the emergency release cable from the front section of the emergency release cable -arrow C-.
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Loosen the clamp -3- and remove the Reducing Agent Injector -N474-.
Vehicles with FWD:
-- Remove the tunnel brace -1-, refer to TUNNEL BRIDGE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the screws and slide the clamping sleeve -arrow- toward the rear.
Danger of causing damage to the decoupling element inside the front exhaust pipe.
- Do not bend decoupling element in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
Prepare Scissor Lift Platform:
-- Equip the Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131B with the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS 6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set VAS 6131/11, and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS 6131/13 as follows:

-- First manually secure the mounting elements to the scissor lift table.
-- Position the Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131B horizontally.
- Note bubble level (sight glass) on support platform.
-- Guide the Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131B under the engine/transmission subassembly.
The subframe could cause an accident if it is not secured.
- Do not loosen the subframe bolts -2- and -3- yet.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolt -1-.
-- Attach mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS 6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS 6131/13 at the left and right on the front of the subframe as shown.
-- Ensure threaded spindles are completely installed.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS 6131/10 at the left and right rear on the subframe crossbrace front connecting points as shown.
-- Position mounting elements Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS 6131/13 at the lower left and right on the wheel bearing housing as shown.
-- Attach mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS 6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set VAS 6131/11 at the left and right rear of the tunnel crossmember, as shown.
-- Rotate the mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come into contact with the mounting points.
-- Attach mounting element base plates to Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131 B and tighten to 20 Nm.
-- Mark the location of the subframe and engine carrier to the longitudinal members using a felt-tip pen.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolts -2 and 3- in steps.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -2-.
Risk of damaging hose and wiring connections as well as engine compartment.
- Make sure all the hoses and lines between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.
- Carefully guide the engine/transmission sub-assembly with subframe out of engine compartment while lowering.
-- Lower the engine/transmission assembly with the Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131 B.
-- Remove the Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131 B with engine/transmission assembly from under the vehicle.
