- Subframe mount, refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .
- Engine to transmission, refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Procedure
Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn.
Replace the self-locking nuts and bolts, sealing rings, seals and O-rings after removing.
Only remove the plugs or caps after installing the lines.
The hose connections as well as the air guide pipes and hoses must be free of oil and grease before installing.
Secure all hose connections with hose clamps .
To mount the air guide hoses on their connectors securely, spray the bolts on the used clamps with rust remover before installing.
When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.
-- Clean the threaded holes in the cylinder block for connecting the engine and transmission using a thread tap before installing the transmission.
-- Install the engine support and engine mount, refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .
-- The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission:
-- Turn the torque converter so that hole next to the notch -arrow- is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.
There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.
-- Insert the Clutch Module Transportation Lock T40170 in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.
-- Bring the starter and the locking piece -1- into the installed position:
-- When jointing the engine and subframe, hold the ATF lines in their installation position.
-- Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.
-- Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary, refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Position the transmission on the engine. Be careful of the starter.
-- Tighten bolts -3 to 11-.
- The locking piece -1- must be installed correctly before installing the starter -arrows-.
If you have difficulty installing the starter, apply a small amount of lubricant to the locking ring.
-- Install the starter, refer to STARTER .
-- Remove the Clutch Module Transportation Lock T40170.
The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.
-- Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.
-- Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).
Use the Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm VAG1332/14 to tighten the bolts.
-- Insert the Crankshaft Socket T40058 guide pins as follows:
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
-- Continue turning the crankshaft 180° in the direction of the engine rotation using the Crankshaft Socket T40058 -arrow-.
-- Tighten the bolts that are accessible in this position to the tightening specification, refer to TORQUE CONVERTER .
-- Turn the crankshaft 60° farther and tighten the remaining five bolts to the tightening specification, refer to TORQUE CONVERTER .
-- Install the supercharger ribbed belt tensioner, refer to RIBBED BELT TENSIONER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, SUPERCHARGER RIBBED BELT .
-- Tighten the drive axles on the transmission flange shafts, refer to Drive Axle .
-- Install the ATF cooler, refer to ATF CIRCUIT .
-- Install the right catalytic converter, refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
-- Install the ATF lines, refer to ATF CIRCUIT .
-- Install the left catalytic converter, refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
-- Lift the engine/transmission assembly with the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131A.
-- Align the subframe and tunnel crossmember using the marks made on the longitudinal members during removal.
-- Tighten the tunnel crossmember bolts, refer to ASSEMBLY MOUNTS .
-- Tighten the subframe bolts only to the tightening specifications, do not tighten them further (tighten the bolts only after axle alignment), refer to Subframe .
Risk of accident due to loose connections.
- If the bolts in the subframe are not tightened to final torque, vehicle must not be driven.
The rest of the installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
-- Install the emergency release cable, refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM .
-- Install the driveshaft, refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING FROM REAR FINAL DRIVE AND INSTALLING or DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING FROM REAR FINAL DRIVE AND INSTALLING or .
-- Install the front muffler, refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Attach the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear, refer to Steering Column .
-- Install the upper control arm and suspension strut, refer to Suspension Strut And Upper Control Arm .
-- Install the subframe crossbrace and stabilizer bar, refer to Subframe .
-- Install the brake caliper, refer to FRONT BRAKES .
-- Attach the positive cables to the positive terminal, refer to BATTERY .
