Steel Spring Shock Absorber, Repairing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

-- Remove the steel spring shock absorber. Refer to STEEL SPRING SHOCK ABSORBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Disassemble the Steel Spring Shock Absorber 

-- Clamp the steel spring shock absorber.

  1. Spring Compressor Kit - Strut Clamping Block: VAG1752/20 

-- Make sure the coil spring -arrow- fits correctly in the tool.

  1. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Tensioner: VAG1752/1 
  2. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Retainer w/Inserts: VAG1752/4 

-- Remove the plug -item  ) OVERVIEW - FRONT STEEL SPRING SHOCK ABSORBER - List Item: Sealing Plugs.

-- Set up the tools as shown in the figure.

  1. Ratchet (Commercially Available)
  2. Shock Absorber Set - Extension SW7: T10001/8 
  3. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Tensioner: VAG1752/1 
  4. Spring Compressor Kit - Strut Clamping Block: VAG1752/20 
  5. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Retainer w/Inserts: VAG1752/4 
  6. Shock Absorber Set - Socket: T10001/5 
  7. Shock Absorber Set - Reversible Ratchet: T10001/11 

-- Pretension the coil spring until the upper support bearing is free.

WARNING:

First pretension the spring so that tension on the upper support bearing is relieved!

-- Remove hex nut from piston rod.

-- Remove individual parts of the steel spring shock absorber.

-- Set up the tools as shown in the figure.

  1. Kukko 45-2
  2. Spring Compressor Kit - Strut Clamping Block: VAG1752/20 

-- Remove the stop cap from the shock absorber

-- Drive the spring plate off of the shock absorber.

Assemble the Steel Spring Shock Absorber 

Install in reverse order of removal while noting the following:

-- Drive the spring plate off of the shock absorber.

-- Set up the tools as shown in the figure.

  1. Press Piece - 28x210mm: VW420 
  2. Socket: 3165 
  3. Spring Compressor Kit - Strut Clamping Block: VAG1752/20 

-- Drive the stop cap off of the shock absorber.

-- Make sure the coil spring -arrow- fits correctly in the tool.

  1. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Tensioner: VAG1752/1 
  2. Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Retainer w/Inserts: VAG1752/4 

-- Install the lower spring support  -1- properly in the lower spring washer -2-.

NOTE:

The markings of the lower spring support and the lower spring washer must be aligned.

-- Engage the stop buffer  -1- in the boot -2- -arrows-.

-- Install the boot on the shock absorber.

-- Engage the boot  -1- with the retaining tabs -arrow- of the stop cap -2-.

-- The end of the lower spring coil  -1- must rest on the stop -arrow- of the lower spring support -2-.

-- The end of the upper spring coil  -1- must rest on the stop -arrow- of the upper spring support -2-.

-- Install the upper spring washer  -2- properly on the upper spring support -1-.

NOTE:

The markings of the upper spring support and the upper spring washer must be aligned.

-- Engage the boot in the support bearing.

-- Tighten new hex nut to piston rod.

-- Relieve the tension on the Spring Tensioner: VAS6046  and remove from the coil spring.

-- Install the steel spring shock absorber. Refer to STEEL SPRING SHOCK ABSORBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Tightening Specification 

Component Tightening Specification
Nut for steel spring shock absorber
  • Use new nut
56 Nm
