Power Steering Pump Delivery Pressure, Checking

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

-- Remove the design cover carefully from the four retaining pins in direction of -arrows-.

-- Remove the air guide hose -1-.

-- Clamp off the suction hose using Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm: 3094  .

-- Remove the screws -1- and remove the pressure line from the power steering pump.

-- Mount the Power Steering Test Unit: VAG1402  and the adapters as illustrated.

  1. Power Steering Test Unit: VAG1402 
  2. Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Hose: VAG1402/6 
  3. Bolt
  4. Pressure Line
  5. Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set - Adapter 2: VAG1402/17-2 1) with Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set - Adapter 3: VAG1402/17-3 
  6. Power Steering Pump
  7. Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set -Adapter 1: VAG1402/17-1  with Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set - Adapter 3: VAG1402/17-3 

1) Replace the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set -Adapter 1: VAG1402/17-1  seal if it is damaged or leaking. Refer to the Parts Information.

NOTE:

Position the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set - Adapter 3: VAG1402/17-3  on the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set -Adapter 1: VAG1402/17-1  so that the hose from the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Hose: VAG1402/6  does not touch the pulley and/or ribbed belt.

Tighten the union nuts on the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Set - Adapter 3: VAG1402/17-3  and the Power Steering Test Unit - Adapter Hose: VAG1402/6  hose hand-tight with an open-end wrench.

-- Remove the Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm: 3094  from the intake hose.

Make sure that lever on pressure gauge stands in position -2-.

-- Install the air guide hose -1-.

-- Start engine and fill hydraulic fluid in reservoir if necessary.

-- Turn the steering wheel approximately 10 times from stop to stop.

-- Check the delivery pressure.

Test Prerequisites

-- With engine at idle speed, close stopcock, not more than five seconds (position -1-) and read pressure.

Specification for Delivery Pressure:

120 to 128 bar (1740 to 1856.48)

If specified value is not obtained, replace power steering pump. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the pressure gauge and adapter.

-- Bleed steering system. Refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING .

-- Check the hydraulic fluid level and fill if necessary. Refer to POWER STEERING, CHECKING FLUID LEVEL .

-- Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .
