Procedure
With the lock carrier installed, the engine is removed downward together with the transmission and the subframe.
During installation, the cable ties must be installed at the same location.
Risk of vehicle tipping over with engine removed.
- The luggage compartment must be empty to secure the vehicle.
-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.
Risk of destroying the electronic components.
- Follow the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Switch off the ignition.
-- Disconnect the ground cable -2- from the battery terminal. Refer to Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting .
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Extract the power steering fluid from the reservoir using the :SMN372500 .
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Carefully pull the engine cover off the retaining pins one after the other in direction of -arrows-. Do not pull sharply on the engine cover or pull it to one side.
-- Remove the lock carrier cover -2-. Refer to .
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
- The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
- Cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully open it to reduce the pressure.
-- Open the coolant reservoir cap -arrow-.
-- Completely remove the left and right front wheel housing liners. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the noise insulation -1 and 2-. Refer to Noise Insulation, Removing and Installing .
-- Remove the left and right front underbody trim panels -2-. Refer to Underbody Trim Panels, Removing and Installing .
-- Loosen the left and right lower longitudinal members and leave in the installation position. Refer to Lock Carrier, Removing and Installing .
AWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT ATTACHED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE .
Vehicles through MY 2013:
Collect escaping coolant in a clean container for disposal.
-- Loosen the clamp -2-, remove the coolant hose from the left front coolant pipe and let the coolant drain out.
Ignore -1-.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow-, remove the coolant hose from the lower left coolant pipe and let the coolant drain out.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Free up the wire for the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on Radiator Outlet -G83- -1-.
-- Lift the clamp and let the coolant drain out to remove the lower right coolant hose -2- from the radiator.
-- Remove the right rear coolant hose -arrow-, lift the clamp, and drain the coolant.
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Clamp off the hydraulic hoses -1 and 2- from the hydraulic fluid reservoir with :3094 .
Place a cloth underneath to catch the draining hydraulic fluid.
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow- and remove the hydraulic hose.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the :VAS6122 .
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Loosen the hose clamps -arrows- and remove the air duct pipe -1-.
There is a risk of contamination.
- Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions when working on the fuel supply system. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Mark the fuel hoses for reinstallation and remove, to do so loosen the hose clamps -1, 2 and 3-.
Vehicles with Engine Codes CTBA, CTBB, CTBD:
The reducing agent can cause skin irritation.
- Observe the safety precautions when working with reducing agent. Refer to SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
- Wear protective eyewear.
To catch escaping reducing agent place a clean cloth under the separation point.
-- Disconnect the metering line -1- from the Reducing Agent Injector -N474- by pressing the release buttons.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the right upper longitudinal member -2-. Refer to .
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Remove the air filter housing -1- upward.
-- Remove the coolant hose -arrow- by lifting the clamp.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Remove the connector -2- from the bracket, disconnect it and free up the wire.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Loosen the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose from the front coolant pipe.
-- Loosen the clamp -1- and remove the air duct hose.
Ignore -2-.
-- Turn the tensioning element clockwise using the :T40087 -arrow- to release the tension on the ribbed belt.
-- Remove the ribbed belt from the A/C compressor ribbed belt pulley and stop the tensioner with the :T10060 A .
A vehicle through MY 2013 is illustrated.
-- Open the hose clamp -3- and remove the air duct hose.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
Ignore -2-.
Vehicles through MY 2013 without Dynamic Steering:
Place a cloth underneath to catch the draining hydraulic fluid.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -2- to disconnect the hydraulic hose.
-- Remove the bolts -1- and remove the hydraulic line and pivot downward.
Vehicles through MY 2013 with Dynamic Steering:
Place a cloth underneath to catch the draining hydraulic fluid.
-- Remove the union nut -1- and remove the hydraulic line from the power steering pump.
-- Open the clamp -3- and remove the hydraulic hose.
Ignore -2-.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the :VAS6122 .
-- Remove the seal -1- near the plenum chamber cover.
-- Remove the plenum chamber cover -2-. Refer to BULKHEAD .
-- Release the cover -2- and pivot it to the side in direction of -arrow-.
-- Remove the nut -4- and free up the positive cable.
-- Remove the nut -3- and remove the positive cable -1-.
-- Release the tabs -1 and 3- and pivot the positive terminal -2- out of the mount.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the engine compartment E-box cover -1- on the right side.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- and free up the wires.
-- Release the retainers in direction of -arrows- and remove the relay panel with the fuse panel -4-.
-- Release the retainer -5- and remove the condenser -6-.
-- Disengage and free up the engine wiring harness on the E-box in the right of the engine compartment and then lay it on the engine.
Ignore -3-.
-- Disconnect the vacuum hose -1- to the brake booster.
-- Remove the coolant hose -2- by lifting the clamp.
-- Remove the tower brace. Refer to SUSPENSION STRUT AND UPPER CONTROL ARM .
-- Open the clips -arrows-, remove the -J623- -2- and lay it on the engine.
Ignore -1, 3, and 4-.
-- Remove the bolt -4- for the battery positive cable -3- and the bolt -2- for the ground cable -1- and free up the wires.
FWD Vehicles:
-- Free up the right and left coolant hoses -arrows-.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then the crossmember for the torque support.
Vehicles with Parking Heater:
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the bracket.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Only for electrohydraulic engine mount solenoid valve version I: free up and disconnect the connector -1- for the Right Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N145-.
Ignore -2-.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Remove the connector -1- from the bracket and disconnect it.
-- Free up the wiring harness -3- on the cylinder head cover.
Ignore -2-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- and free up the wire.
Ignore -2 and 3-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- on the Engine Temperature Control Sensor -G694- and free up the wire.
Ignore -2-.
-- Only for electrohydraulic engine mount solenoid valve version II: disconnect the connector -3- on the Left Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144-.
Ignore -1 and 2-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- on the Oil Pressure Regulation Valve -N428- and free up the wire.
Ignore -2-.
-- Disconnect connector -2- from the Transmission Coolant Valve -N488-.
Ignore -2 and arrows-.
Risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
- Do not touch connector terminals in the transmission connector with hands.
-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).
-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.
-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.
-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- and free up the wires on the transmission.
-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.
Ignore -1-.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
Refrigerant can cause serious injury.
- Do not open the A/C system refrigerant circuit.
-- Remove the connector -1- from the bracket and disconnect it.
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Free up the wiring harness and place on the A/C compressor.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
Risk of damaging the refrigerant lines and hoses.
- Do not bend, twist or stretch the refrigerant lines and hoses.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-. Then remove the A/C compressor from the bracket and tie it up on the left side.
Vehicles through MY 2013:
-- Remove the connectors from bracket and disconnect:
- For the Left Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144- / Right Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N145- (only Solenoid Valve Version I)
- For the Servotronic Solenoid Valve -N119-
Vehicles from MY 2014:
-- Disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wiring harness.
Ignore -1-.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and free up the ground cable on the left longitudinal member.
-- Remove the nut -3- and disconnect the connector -2-.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Disconnect the connector -arrow- on the left and right from the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- / Right Front Level Control System Sensor -G289- and free up the wire.
-- Disconnect the connectors -arrow- at the left and right on the front speed sensors.
-- Remove the brake caliper and secure it with the brake hose still attached inside the wheel housing with wire. Refer to FRONT BRAKE CALIPER .
Risk of damaging the brake pistons.
- Do not operate the brake pedal when the brake caliper is removed.
-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the nut -2- and the bolt -1-.
-- Remove the upper control arm upward from the wheel bearing housing -arrows-.
-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the left and right stabilizer bar bolt -1-.
-- Remove the left and right nuts -3-.
The bolt -2- will be removed later.
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to Subframe Crossbrace, Removing and Installing .
There is a risk of damaging the suspension components.
- If the subframe mount, steering gear or subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly, do not rest the vehicle on its wheels.
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push it upward. Refer to Steering Intermediate Shaft, Removing and Installing .
A vehicle through MY 2013 is illustrated.
-- Release the retainers in direction of -A arrows- and slide the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in the direction of -arrow B-.
-- Disengage the rear section of the emergency release cable from the front section of the emergency release cable -arrow C-.
Vehicles with Engine Codes CMHA, CPNA and CPNB:
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Loosen the clamp -3- and remove the Reducing Agent Injector -N474-.
Ignore -1-.
Vehicles with Engine Codes CTBA, CTBB, CTBD:
-- Remove the NOx Sensor Control Module 2 -J881- -arrow-.
FWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the tunnel brace -1-. Refer to UNDERBODY PANEL .
-- Loosen the threaded connections and slide the clamping sleeve -arrow- toward the rear.
Risk of damaging the decoupling element inside the front exhaust pipe.
- Do not bend the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
If the engine and transmission are to be separated for the subsequent work, separate the drive plate threaded connection at the flywheel/torque converter. Refer to Continuation for All Vehicles: .
Scissor Lift Table, Preparing:
-- Equip the :VAS6131B with the :VAS6131/10 and :VAS6131/11 and :VAS6131/13 as follows:

-- Secure the mounting elements to the scissor lift table by hand.
-- Position the :VAS6131B horizontally.
- Note the bubble level (sight glass) on support platform.
-- Guide the :VAS6131B under the engine/transmission assembly.
The subframe could cause an accident if it is not secured.
- Do not loosen the subframe bolts -2 and 3- yet.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolt -1-.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the :VAS6131/10 and :VAS6131/13 to the front of the subframe on the left and right as shown.
-- Make sure the threaded spindles are completely screwed in.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the :VAS6131/10 and :VAS6131/11 to the front connecting points for the subframe crossbrace on the left and right sides at the rear as shown.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the :VAS6131/13 to the bottom of the wheel bearing housing on the left and right sides as shown.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the :VAS6131/10 and :VAS6131/11 to the tunnel crossmember on the left and right sides at the rear as shown.
-- Rotate all of the mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come in contact with the mounting points.
-- Fasten the mounting element base plates to 20 Nm on the :VAS6131B .
-- Mark the installation position of the subframe and tunnel crossmember to the longitudinal members using a felt-tip pen.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolts -2 and 3- in stages.
-- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts -arrows-.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -2-.
Risk of damaging the hose and line connections as well as the engine compartment.
- Make sure all the hose and line connections between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.
- Carefully guide the engine/transmission assembly with the subframe out of engine compartment when lowering.
-- Lower the engine/transmission assembly with the : VAS6131B .
-- Remove the :VAS6131B with the engine/transmission assembly from under the vehicle.
