Engine, Removing

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2018 Audi S8, 2018 Audi A8 Quattro, 2017 Audi S8, 2017 Audi A8 Quattro, and 2016 Audi S8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Procedure

NOTE:

The engine is removed downward together with the transmission and subframe.

During installation, the cable ties must be installed at the same location.

All bolts on suspension components with bonded rubber bushings must be tightened in curb weight position (no load).

Bonded rubber bushings have a limited range of rotation. Axle components with bonded rubber bushings must be brought into the position they will be in when driving before they are tightened (curb weight position). Otherwise, the bonded rubber bushing will have tension, which will reduce the service life.

Measure dimension -a- from the center of the wheel to the lower edge of the wheel housing before beginning work, for example, using a tape measure.

Fig 1: Dimension From Center Of Wheel To Lower Edge Of Wheel Housing

The measurement must be performed in curb weight position (unloaded condition).

Note the measurement. This number will be needed when tightening the bolts/nuts.

WARNING:

Risk of vehicle tipping over with engine removed.

  • The luggage compartment must be empty to secure the vehicle.
NOTE:

To be able to turn the drive axle to remove it, shift the transmission to "N" and release the electro-mechanical parking brake before disconnecting the battery.

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying the electronic components.

  • Follow the steps for disconnecting the battery.
