Exterior Lighting: Overview
Headlamps
The headlamp system consists of:
- Headlamp assemblies
- Ballasts (Navigator only)
- Headlamp switch
- HCM (Navigator only)
- LH steering column multifunction switch
- BCM
- SCCM
Expedition
The halogen headlamp system is a quad-beam pattern system. It consists of replaceable low and high beam bulbs in each headlamp assembly. The park, turn and side marker lamps are integrated into the headlamp assembly. The park/turn lamp bulb is individually replaceable. The side marker lamps are LEDs and are not individually replaceable.
Navigator
The HID headlamp system is a quad-beam system. It consists of a single replaceable headlamp bulb in each headlamp assembly and an electronic shutter to change the beam pattern. The park, turn and side marker lamps are LEDs, integrated into the headlamp assembly, and are not individually replaceable.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) system consists of:
- Low beams (Expedition only)
- Daytime running lamp assemblies (Navigator only)
- Signature LEDs (integrated into headlamps, Navigator only)
- BCM
For the Expedition, the DRL system operates the low beam headlamps at a reduced intensity.
For the Navigator, the DRL system operates the Signature LEDs and the daytime running lamp assemblies at full intensity.
Autolamps
The autolamp system consists of:
- Light sensor
- Headlamp switch
- BCM
The autolamp system provides light sensitive automatic on/off control of the exterior lamps. The autolamp system keeps the exterior lamps on for a preselected period of time after the ignition is turned OFF (20 seconds is the factory default setting). The preselected time is adjustable up to approximately 3 minutes by using the message center controls.
Stoplamps
The stoplamp system consists of:
- Stoplamp switch
- Rear lamp assemblies
- High mounted stoplamp
- BCM
The stoplamp switch is located on the brake pedal assembly. Voltage is supplied to the rear lamps and high mounted stoplamp when the brake pedal is applied.
Turn Signal and Hazard Lamps
The turn lamp system consists of:
- Front turn lamps
- Rear lamp assemblies
- Outside rear view mirrors
- LH steering column multifunction switch
- Hazard flasher lamp switch (integrated into the FCIM on vehicles equipped with SYNC ®)
- SCCM
- BCM
When the LH steering column multifunction switch is placed in the LH TURN or RH TURN position, the corresponding turn lamps flash on and off.
The hazard flasher lamp switch is located in the center instrument panel finish panel (integrated into the FCIM on vehicles equipped with SYNC ®). When the hazard function is active, all the turn lamps flash on and off.
The front turn signal indicator lamps are integrated into the headlamp assemblies.
The rear turn signal indicator lamps operate independently of the stoplamps (Navigator only).
Parking, Rear and License Plate Lamps
The parking lamp system consists of:
- Front parking lamps
- Daytime running lamp assemblies (Navigator only)
- Signature LEDs (integrated into headlamps, Navigator only)
- Front side marker lamps
- Rear lamp assemblies
- Liftgate parking lamp assembly (Navigator only)
- License plate lamps
- Headlamp switch
- SCCM
- BCM
The front parking and side marker lamps are integrated into the headlamp assemblies.
Front parking lamps function is integrated into the daytime running lamp assemblies (Navigator only)
The rear parking and side marker lamps are LEDs integrated into the rear lamp assemblies and are not individually replaceable (Navigator only).
Fog Lamps, Expedition Only
The fog lamp system consists of:
- Fog lamps
- Headlamp switch
- SCCM
- BCM
The fog lamps can be turned on when the ignition is in RUN or ACCESSORY, the parking lamps are ON, and the high beams are OFF.
The fog lamp switch is integrated into the headlamp switch.
Reversing Lamps
The reverse lamp system consists of:
- Reverse lamps
- PCM
- BCM
When the transmission is placed in REVERSE, the reversing lamps are illuminated. The reversing lamps are located within the rear lamp assemblies.
The reversing lamps are LEDs integrated into the rear lamp assemblies and are not individually replaceable (Navigator only).
Trailer Lamps
The trailer tow system consists of the following components:
- Trailer tow connector
- Trailer tow relays
- Trailer Module (TRM)
- TBC module (if equipped)
- BCM
The trailer stop/trun lamps and trailer battery charge are supplied power by the Trailer Module (TRM).
The trailer parking and reversing lamps are supplied power by BJB relays that are energized to correspond with the exterior lighting functions of the vehicle.
