Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Step ladder such as Step Ladder VAS5085
- Engine Bung Set VAS6122
- Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B with Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS6131/10, Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set VAS6131/11 and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS6131/13
- Shop Crane - Drip Tray VAS6208
- Hose Clip Pliers VAS6340
- Hose Clip Pliers VAS6362
Procedure
With lock carrier installed, engine is removed downward together with the transmission and the subframe.
During installation, cable ties must be installed at the same location.
Risk of vehicle tipping over with engine removed.
- Secure vehicle. Luggage compartment must be empty for this.
To be able to turn the driveshaft to remove it, shift the transmission to "N" and release the electromechanical parking brake before disconnecting the battery.
-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.
Danger of causing damage to electronic components.
- Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Turn off the ignition.
-- Disconnect the Ground (GND) cable from the battery terminal, refer to BATTERY .
-- Carefully pull the engine cover off the bolts one after the other -arrows-. Do not remove the engine cover on one side or in a jerking manner.
-- Remove the lock carrier cover, refer to FRONT BUMPER .
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
- The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
- Cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and then open it slowly to release the pressure.
-- Remove the cap -arrow- from the coolant reservoir.
-- Remove the left and right front wheel housing liners completely, refer to WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Remove the noise insulations, refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the left and right front underbody panels, refer to UNDERBODY PANEL .
-- Remove the left and right lower longitudinal member, refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the driveshaft, refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING FROM REAR FINAL DRIVE AND INSTALLING or DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING FROM REAR FINAL DRIVE AND INSTALLING .
-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip TrayVAS6208 underneath.
-- Loosen the clamps -2-, drain any remaining coolant and then remove the coolant hoses from the left front coolant pipes.
-- Remove the bolt -1-.
-- Open the clamp -arrow-, drain the coolant and then remove the connection from the radiator.
-- Disconnect the coolant hoses by lifting the retaining clamp -3- and loosening the hose clamps -1 and 2-.
-- Hold the coolant hoses downward and drain the remaining coolant.
Ignore item -4-.
-- Remove the coolant hose by loosening the hose clamp -arrow- and letting the coolant drain out.
-- Free up the hose -1- from the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister on the air guide pipe.
-- Remove the vacuum hose -2- from the air guide pipe connection.
-- Loosen the clamps -arrows- and remove the air guide pipe.
-- Press the release button to disconnect the connector -1- and remove the vacuum hose -2-.
-- Remove the EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve 1 -N80- from the bracket and lay it aside with the hose connected.
-- Remove the upper right longitudinal member, refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the air filter housing -1- upward.
Ignore item -2-.
-- Remove the plenum chamber cover, refer to BULKHEAD .
-- Release the cover -2- and swivel it to the side -arrow-.
-- Remove the nut -4- and free up the positive cable.
-- Remove the nut -3- and remove the positive cable -1-.
-- Open the tabs -1 and 3- and swivel the positive terminal -2- out of the mount.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the engine compartment E-box cover -1-.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- and free up the wires.
-- Release the retainers -arrows- and remove the relay carrier with the fuse panel -4-.
-- Open the release -5- and remove the condenser -6-.
-- Disengage and free up the engine wiring harness on the engine compartment E-box and then lay it on the engine.
Ignore item -3-.
-- Open the clamp -arrow- to remove the coolant hose.
Risk of injury from fuel.
- To reduce fuel pressure, lay cloths around connecting point before opening fuel system and carefully loosen.
-- Open the retaining clips to free up the fuel hose -1-.
-- Disconnect the fuel hose by first pressing the connector coupling together -A arrows-, then press the release buttons down -B arrows-.
-- Remove the connector coupling with the release buttons pressed.
-- Disconnect the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) hose -arrow- by pressing the release buttons on both sides.
-- Press the release buttons on both sides to disconnect the vacuum hose -arrow-.
-- Free up the vacuum hose and move it to the left.
-- Open the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant line.
-- Free up the coolant line and move it to the left.
-- Remove the coolant hose -arrow- from the front coolant pipe by lifting the retaining clamp.
-- Remove the tower brace, refer to Suspension Strut And Upper Control Arm .
-- Open the clamps -arrows-, remove the Engine Control Module -J623- -2- and lay it on the engine.
Ignore items -1, 3 and 4-.
Vehicles with Parking Heater:
-- Loosen the clamp -2- and remove the muffler -2- for the parking heater.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the mount.
All Vehicles:
-- Remove the bolt -4- for the battery positive cable -3- and the bolt -2- for the GND cable -1- and free up the cables.
-- Remove the bolt -2- on the left front coolant pipe.
Ignore item -1-.
-- Pivot the tensioner clockwise -arrow- to release the tension on the ribbed belt.
-- Remove the ribbed belt and release the tension on the tensioning element.
Ignore the Locking Pin T10060A.
-- Disconnect the connector -3- from the Left Electrohydraulic Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144-.
Ignore items -1 and 2-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
Risk of damaging refrigerant lines and hoses.
- Do not stretch, kink or bend refrigerant lines and hoses.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-. Then remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor from the bracket and tie it up on the left side.
-- Disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.
Ignore item -1-.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and free up the GND cable on the left longitudinal member.
-- Remove nut -3- and disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Disconnect the left and right connector -arrow- from the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- / Right Front Level Control Sensor -G289- and free up the wires.
-- Disconnect the connectors -arrow- at the left and right on the front speed sensors.
-- Remove the brake caliper and with the brake hose still connected, inside the wheel housing using wire, refer to [For engine(s) CDRA,CTUB,CEUA,CGTA,CPNA,CEJA] Front Brakes .
Risk of damaging brake pistons.
- Do not operate brake pedal with brake caliper removed.
-- Remove the nut -2- and the bolt -1-.
-- Remove the upper control arm upward from the wheel bearing housing -arrows-.
-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
-- Remove the left and right stabilizer bar bolt -1-.
-- Remove the left and right nuts -3-.
The bolt -2- will be removed later.
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace, refer to Subframe .
The suspension components could be damaged.
- Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear push them upward, refer to Steering Column .
-- Remove the nuts -1- and the bolts -2- and then remove the left front muffler.
-- Remove the nuts -4- and the bolts -3- and then remove the right front muffler.
-- Release the retainers -arrows A- and pull the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in direction of -arrow B-.
-- Disengage the rear section of the emergency release cable from the front section of the emergency release cable -arrow C-.
Prepare Scissor Lift Platform
-- Equip the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B with the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set VAS6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set VAS6131/11, and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS6131/13 as follows:

-- First manually secure the mounting elements to the scissor lift table.
-- Position the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B horizontally.
- Note bubble level (sight glass) on support platform.
-- Guide the Scissor Lift Table VAS6131B under the engine/transmission subassembly.
The subframe could cause an accident if it is not secured.
- Do not loosen the subframe bolts -2 and 3- yet.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolt -1-.
-- Attach mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi SetVAS6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set VAS6131/13 at the left and right on the front of the subframe as shown in the illustration.
-- Ensure threaded spindles are completely installed.
-- Attach the mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi SetVAS6131/10 at the left and right rear on the subframe crossbrace front connecting points as shown in the illustration.
-- Position mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Q7 SetVAS 6131/13 at the lower left and right on the wheel bearing housing as shown in the illustration.
-- Attach mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi SetVAS6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - A8 SetVAS6131/11 at the left and right rear of the tunnel crossmember, as shown in the illustration.
-- Rotate the mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come into contact with the mounting points.
-- Attach mounting element base plates to Scissor Lift TableVAS6131B and tighten to 20 Nm.
-- Mark the location of the subframe and engine carrier to the longitudinal members using a felt-tip pen.
-- Remove the left and right subframe bolts -2 and 3- in steps.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -2-.
Risk of damaging hose and wiring connections as well as engine compartment.
- Make sure all the hoses and lines between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.
- Carefully guide the engine/transmission sub-assembly with subframe out of engine compartment while lowering.
-- Lower the engine/transmission assembly with the Scissor Lift TableVAS6131B.
-- Remove the Scissor Lift TableVAS6131B with engine/transmission assembly from under the vehicle.
